Rear differential?

I have a troubleshooting question. I have a '97 F250 XLT (automatic) 5.4 V8 with about 133,000 miles on it. It is making a noise and I'm not sure what it is. When I accelerate at a normal driving rate, there is a loud rattling sound that comes from the bottom of the truck, not the engine. It happens randomly and it seems to happen less on cooler days. A friend told me that is might be the rear differential. Also, the noise seems to lessen or stop when I let up on the gas or apply the brake. Unfortunately, I cannot tell if the sound is coming from the back or the front. Any thoughts???

Exhaust heat shields? Check them all...

A "rattling" doesn't sound like the diff... a whine or hum would come first, then by the time it "rattles" you'd be stuck on the side of the road.
