Just ran into this problem on my Dads '95, Oil cooler oring leaking oil. Removed cooler to install new core and orings. While cleaning up the parts I noticed the by-pass valve was missing. The oil pressure regulator valve was also loose in its bore and fell out during removal. Gonna bite the bullet and get a new filter head from Ford, $152
If you don't want a coolant bath there is a plug in the block that will drain most of the coolant out of oil cooler and block. On this truck, it was to the rear of the filter head and required a 1/4" sq driver to remove. I loosened it until the coolant would dribble out into a bucket. Took about 10 minutes but my sleeves stayed dry.

Interesting thread for sure.
My gal has a 1996 350 with the 7.3 v8 rattle.
It is fun leaving and entering a quiet RV park.
My gal, who likes getting all oily, figured she
would change the oil and filter. I was working
on the other side of the shop when I heard an
unusual screech. She had dropped the filter on
her chest because a spring had hit her in the
face, O'well. There was oil every where. Looked
for the spring and found the plastic plug and the
washer, took a while to find the spring.It had fell
in that extra garment under her shirt, go figure.
I got under the truck and found where the parts
had come from (after reading here). Funny thing
is there was nothing holding it all in place except
three peen marks. There is no groove for a snap
ring or pin of any kind. Called a friend who said he
had seen this once before. Without going to buy
another filter adapter, I just did a better job of
peening it back in place on the edge with a sharp
pointed punch. Find out if it held in about 3000
miles.
I should have taken some photos of the project.
