But before he arrives, lets start with the basics, Have you tuned it up? is it running correctly? Any Vacuum leaks? What year is it?
I wonder if this one is Gutless

I would beg to differ. I have one 82 F-100 300ci,4.9 thats turning 280,000 soon and still has power and reliability. I add duralube high mile engine treatment to each oil change and clean the plugs, cap and rotor at every oil change.every other fill up I put in carb cleaner into the tank. It has been the best work truck I have owned so far.

something is wrong with it if its gutless.
vacuum leaks kill power, check all the hoses and tighten all the intake/exhaust manifold bolts.
does it blow black smoke at startup and take a while to warm up? thats one of the most common signs that the carter YF 1bbl has died.
is it tuned up, clean air filter, a plugged convertor isn't uncommon after 20 years, even a weak fuel pump will kill speed.

I have an 86 F150 with a straight six and single barrel carb and she runs GREAT! You may want to listen to the suggestions here. Vacuum leaks and electrical probs can really drag down performance...I know. Been There Done That! :P
Now I have my truck sorted out and she runs down the freeway like the best of them...

My 82 F100, 4.9 runs pretty well...not the fastest off the line, but reliable as hell (even with a slight miss that I haven't tracked down yet). Give us some more info on the truck (symptoms, what steps you've taken, tranny, gearing, etc.).
Edit: Oh yeah, and it just PASSED RI inspections--with more stringent emissions standards--with flying colors! Very happy about that....

You also forgot to mention MPG. Mine gets an average of 21 MPG, with a T-18 Four speed, and 2.75 gears.
Mine will also out tow a 302 V8, (I know I've had both.) and use less gas to do it.
As for speed? On the freeway, it will keep up with the other guys. Fully loaded doing 70 MPH. (Legally mind you) Can't complain with that.

My 85 is a 300 / Tremec 3 speed and had the 2.75 gears. I have a T-18 just laying around

Ive had both a 302 an 300 six back in the carbureated days. The 300 six outperformed the 302 every time. Fuel injection made the 302 a lot more responsive an made more power. The 300 would outorque it though. The 300 motor will go down as the best motor in history. If I could get one today I would.
