87 f150 fuel guage trouble

The front tank reads full all the time, and when I switch it to the front tank I think its still pulling from the rear. The other morning I woke up and now the rear tank always reads empty. Any Ideas. I dont have a repair manule yet, sr y guys your all I got. Where can I start my quest?

I don't know if you done a search on the forum or not, but there are tons of posts regarding the fuel bypass condition you are talking about. I had the same problem on my '92 F150. Unfortunately, your truck most likely is not eligible for the recall. Which by the way didn't fix mine. The only real way I am aware of is to replace the fuel pump assembly in the front tank because the integral check valve is stuck. Hopefully someone else on the forum may know where you might be able to get an in line check valve (which is whay they try to do on the recall). Either way it's a pain. Good Luck.

17 or 19 gal? I dont know. How do I check to see if its the intank pump or the inline pump? auto zone has the intank for under 50.00 but the "master" is 129.00, can you explain what that is to me?

You might waht to check your tank selector switch. It might be shorted out and not registering the sending units. The center wire goes to the gauge and the upper and lower come from the tanks. Make sure when the switch is flipped there is continuity from top to center and then from bottom to center. Check this before spending $$$ chasing something down.

You can also just use a jumper wire. Go from middle to top and see what the gauge says and then go from middle to bottom and see what it says. If it changes from what the switch says, your switch is gone. I had the pump power side but my gauge worked. It's quite possible the opposite is happening. May not be the issue, but I started at the relay, and worked all the way back to the switch to find the switch was bad. I now start at the switch at all times.
