Where to find a decent 8' bed? (or shipping a truck from warmer climates)
I live in WV on the Western MD border. Because of the harsh winters around here most old trucks are rusted terribly and I can't seem to find a good one to swap a bed off of. Has anyone tried to buy a non-rusted truck or bed from somewhere and have it shipped via freight? How much does something like that cost and how do you do it?
Also, I know this is a long shot, but if anyone that reads this happens to be in South Central PA, Eastern WV, or Western MD and has a decent 8' bed from a 73-79 Ford, feel free to let me know.

When I restored my 79, i had a buddy who owned a body shop track one down for me. He found me fenders, hood, doors, and a box from a rust free truck from California. I bought the truck for $1500 and had it shipped to my home(Illinois) for $700.

I dont know the name or exact location off hand will try to get it for you. But through a freinds family I found there is a guy near or in York Pa not far from MD who brings in and parts out these trucks. They paid 600 for a pretty striped 2wd but it had a rust free cab front clip and bed. Well the bed needs some wheelwell and dent work heck it even still had all of the xlt trim minus the missing doors. But the under side of the cab is still body color and spotless. Anyway after the holiday I will try to get name number etc and post back.

Get a 80 and later bed and put 73-79 quarters on it. Some of the 80's bed are galvanized underneath, the quarters may be shot but the undernaeth will be rust free. Thats what I did, bed cost $60 and new quarters are about $170 each.

Stay away from western PA. Very few good trucks around here. Alot of the trucks I look at have lots of rust on them. I found a 79 F-250 that had little rust on outsides, good crossmembers, but holes in the bed. I am going to buy a replacement floor and weld it in.

I once saw an add at one of the local used car dealers. I think the place was called "brown's of two rivers". They had new assembled beds for 1200.00, but that was a coupla years ago. If you try to find them, I think they were north of me somewhere. Illinois or Idaho something like that. Awful exspensive but a new bed might be worth it if you can't find a good used one.
Sorry I can't remember where they're from, but like I said it's been a coupla years.

Beware of some of the "rust free" truck parts dealers around the country. Let me tell you from experience. I bought a 8' bed for my '77 from Southern Truck Parts in Emly City michigan in March 2001. I paid $900.00 for the bed that fit '73-'79 Ford Trucks. I was assured it was rust free and had been shipped from Texas. I had the box media blasted (they use plastic beads instead of sand due to less heat build up) for $350.00 When the guy got half way finished blasting the box he called me and told me the floor of the bed looked like Swiss cheese and the above the wheel wells was totally rotted out but filled with body filler etc. I should have had an experienced body man look at it before I bought it but I didn't.I had the box fixed for $1,000.00 by a good body man. Many of the trucks scattered around this country which are now in Texas or Arizona my have spent the better part of their lives in climates which use salt on the roads in the winter. I have a beautiful box now but my wallet is quite a bit lighter also.
