Restored Y Block 292 1957 marine
#2
Hi Chuck, welcome to FTE!
The B signifies a block casting revision (replacing A). Hard to say for certain exactly what; could be a minor core change for casting purposes, with no functional difference. As a general rule of thumb, the casting suffixes don't mean anything relevant to us, from a rebuilding standpoint. A major change is generally reflected as an entirely different casting number, in the prefix. As usual with Ford, there are exceptions.
An exact restoration might require a specific suffix (or date code), but even then it's hazy, particularly so with casting numbers before 1960 or so.
P.S. FWIW: it's quite possible that the "A" suffix never existed for a particular part. Also, there are frequently AA, AB, & others (like "GC") suffixes, especially for Seventies' parts. Again, doesn't normally mean much.
