6.0 rough idle and white smoke at start
I just bought a 6.0 2003 excursion. I was going to search for the answer but search was disabled so I thought I would ask. Dealer replaced one injector and insists the others are good. After sitting overnight when I start the excursion it idkes very rough for 5-10 minutes and white smoke comes out at start up. After that it runs good the rest of the day. It gets worse the longer it sits. The temperature does not make a difference. I believe I have more leaky injectors but the dealer insists they are all good. My dodge diesel doesn't run like this at start up. Any ideas? What should I tell the dealer to convince them? Has 74k on it.
Thanks,
Tony

If the rig hasn't had any modifications, It shouldnt smoke at all. I'd go to a different dealer, or if you can, let the rig sit on his lot for a couple days. Don't give'm the keys. Then start the engine with the service manager present. Prove to him that there's still an issue.
Injectors or Injector pump? EGR??? Sounds like you can rule out fuel quality.

If injector pump pressure is low, ... Less fuel delivered? Runs fine once warmed up? Cooling properties of the EGR system? I could see where a stuck open EGR valve at cold idle might cause these symptoms too. Especially the rough idle. EBP sensor?
I think this rig needs another microscopic look by a good service technician. Unfortunately, I've heard of some instances where a component has failed, but there's no code thrown. Stick to your guns and get your money's worth out of the truck.

I have an '05 w/ a 6.0 and AT. Ford posted: SOME 2003 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES AND EXCURSION EQUIPPED WITH THE 6.0L ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT A ROUGH/SURGING IDLE, EXCESSIVE SMOKE, OR POOR THROTTLE RESPONSE UPON DRIVE AWAY. ENGINEERING IS INVESTIGATING. PERFORM ONLY BASIC DIAGNOSIS INCLUDING VISUAL INSPECTION AND DTC RETRIEVAL. THERE IS NO EFFECTIVE REPAIR FOR RESOLVING THE CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME. DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS, PCM OR IDM UNLESS INDICATED BY DTC. CONTINUE TO MONITOR OASIS.
My '05 did this since 5k miles and I just took it in at 22k with the excessive smoke all the time, we are talking fog in the neighborhood white smoke.. Dealer has no idea what to do.
Good luck.
