NP435 mated w/np205 - what oils?

Howdy all.....I have a mated np435/np205 tranny package in my 1967 F-250 4x4....I'm curious as to the capacities for oil change out and the proper weight of oil for each.

You fill both till the fluid comes out the fill hole or 1/8 of a inch below the fill hole. They both use 80-90 I never used anything else in a 205 and a 435.

kenworth,i think if you reference the ford shop manual, you will find the recomended oil for a np435 is 50 weight ,not 80w90 gear oil.im not saying you or others are wrong in using gear oil,but its not what the factory specs recomend.i rebuilt my np435 to factory spec ,with facory ford parts ,and i was really surprised ford spec recomended 50 weight oil.i checked with ford, and they said 50 weight.ihave been running it for 10 years now.

I think one of my manuals said to use straight 50wt or even 30wt oil too. (depending on climate)

This seems to be a question I see often that gets a lot of different answers. When the trans shop put new seals in my NP435, the shop owner said he put 80/90w gear oil in the NP435. When I asked him if I would not have problems with good lube flow in cold temps when using that heavy of lube, he replied that his ford service manual specified that weight lube for the NP435....

I am reading from my 79 ford original owners guide right now, and it reads on page 157 on the Specifications and Capacities Chart "Lubricant Specifications" as follows.....

> 3 speed, 4 speed manual transmission and 4 speed overdrive transmission <
Ford Part name = standard transmission lube
Ford Part Number = DZ-19C547-A
Ford Specification = ESP-M2C83-C

>Transfer Case _ Four Wheel Drive<

Ford Part name = standard transmission lube
Ford Part Number = DZ-19C547-A
Ford Specification = ESP-M2C83-C

So, I am still confused...

The ford part number has a smiley face in it?

This is the problem I get when I ask this question......50 weight or 80/90W??? Will having a more viscous oil in there damage the tranny?

Can anyone reference those part numbers to determine the correct answer?

i went to my shop and looked up the spec in the ford factory shop manual,it is:new process 435 (sae 50 engine oil) (ESE-M2C39-A) the approximate lubricant refill capacity (pints) -U.S. 6.75 , IMP 5.9 i got this info right out of my factory ford shop manual, the same manual that i used to order all the internal parts for my np435 trans 10 years ago.im still running 50 weight oil, and i use my truck for 4x4ing,and i also pull a 12000lb tri-axle enclosed racerar trailer through the rocky mountains .my trans is still good.my truck has been dyno at 425 hp to the wheels .i hope this helps you choose the oil you want to use.-billy

Nope, I did not put smileys in the ford part number. . Apparently this site has some type of copyright filter maybe ? , that automatically inserts the smiley whenever a Ford OEM part number is typed in. Just my guess tho, < I put that one in,

on edit: I just run my Detroit Iron 79 Ford CD manual , and it shows the same thing. Transmission fluid, in both and transfer. It only shows Hypoid gear oil going in the differentials. I agree with the 50 weight oil tho , it makes sense, but why are these owners manuals saying trans fluid ??? No wonder everyone is asking what is right to use,

tranny & T-case oil

Unimog, how cold does it get in Boulder ? I ask because it might make you want to reconsider the 50W in the tranny and 80W-90 in the t-case. Where I live in Michigan, the overnight temps can be 0*F for weeks on end, and at deer camp in the U.P. we had -35*F or colder for a week straight. The truck starts okay with M1 15-50 oil (synthetic ) in it, but sometimes I went down the road a mile or more in 2nd gear, and the shifter was almost impossible to move to 3rd. If you are going to drive the truck in the cold and snow, and thats what old ford 4wds are for, you may want to consider Mobil's 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. That stuff flows so well in the cold, the truck will shift almost like it was summer. I highly recommend it. DF, @ his Dad's house

Well, Colorado....believe it or not, has more sunny days than Miami....We get snow, but it melts away almost as fast as it falls.....the temps do get in the single digits, but nothing like Michigan...I lived in Lansing for a year and a half.....I know that that is like!!! It was actually -20 for almost 2 weeks that winter...and that's ambient temp...NO wind chill...those numbers were in the -43 degree range!
