Currently running 5w30 and have been since I picked it up at 93000 miles. The p.o. was running 10w40 since new and mechanics have told me some weird stuff about it like they would be surprised if the truck made it over 115000 miles. I just started putting 5w30 in cause thats what the manuel specified, and it never used any excessive oil or had any other trouble oil related, and I am now almost at 100000 miles from when I bought it.

5w-20 motorcraft, with FL-820 filter.65k and no problems.the tolerances in the engines nowadays are .0005 to .0025 in. compared to .002 to .004in 0n most clearances.thick weight oil isnt very freindly, but people are using it.i have seen valve damage on veh. that people push to the red line in cold temps.

I've run 5-20 since new, and with 113,000, it's still going strong. Looking forward to reading about noisy or smoking engines though. Rob

2002 Expedition, 5.4L. Been running Motorcraft 5W-20 with a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter. Expy has 43,000 miles and runs great. No oil usage between changes.

I've used mobil 1 15w50 in my 89 F150 I6 for many years and at 248,000 miles it uses no oil between 5000 mile oil changes and still runs good. I started using the same oil in my 01 superduty 5.4 and don't see any reason why it would be harmful to it The oil looks really thin when it pours out of the bottle and also I have looked at many web sites related to using mobil 1 15w50 in a modular engine and have never come across any info. associating this oil with any abnormal or detrimental engine wear. The only place I've ever read about it being harmful to a modular is on this forum and I read it as only being someones personal opinion but I've never seen any technical data to back any claims that mobil 1 15w50 will hurt my 5.4 modular engine. This is somewhat similar to oil filter discussions where nearly everyone on this forum hates Fram filters but I've used them forever on a lot of different vehicles with never a problem. It's all a matter of personal preference.
