Run a good 10W30 then if you can get that by the gallon. I run 5W30 out of habit and because I've found very good deals on full synthetic oils (Penzoil Plat 2-for-1 currently). My other cars call for 5W30 and I put 10W40 in them and are perfectly happy with it. The whole closer tolerance thing so run 5Wxx is a load of crap really. Talking about oil molecules here and mass production engines...you can run 15W oil and be fine unless you are well below freezing. Most makers spec much thicker oils in other countries too. Exact same engine, exact same tolerances, thicker oil....go figure. In perennially warm climates I've read the owners of Ford GT supercars and other high end cars use European spec 15W50. I'm sure those cars run much closer tolerances than a Triton 5.4L and the oil has to travel just as far on start-up.

If there is a Pep Boys near you, try there for the 1 gallon 5W-30. The store I go to carries the MC 5W-30 Synthetic Blend in the gallon jugs.

Why not use the oil the Ford owners manual says to use? Ford tech. says to use a non bleed down oil filter so oil pressure gets to the cam phasers quicker.

you should start a new thread for that, but it could be a lot of things.
The first thing i would check is the heat shields on the exhaust.
Mine clatter against the pipe at that RPM.

This thread is really old but I'll add a link to this supporting the heavier weight oils since it was mentioned.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/87...ml#post7856326

Seems a lot of folks think the heavier oils are good. I havent made my mind up what I will do when my warranty expires but for 30k at least I am running 5W-20 per warranty.

Well, my bro in law uses 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum in his o4 5.4. The spec is 5w20, but someone he knows at the dealership garage says they use 5w20 when they have it, if they run out, in goes the 5w30, and the customer knows nothing different.
His truck and our 3 liter Duratec Taurus, all spec'd for 5w20, use 5w30 and are just fine.
That's the oil that was spec'd in these motors originally, and I can't imagine they tightened up the clearances just to use 5w20.

Syn oil, which type ?

A neighbor picked up a pickup with a 4.6 with 112K miles, it runs great and is in great shape, i'm not sure of the year. He asked me and I have no idea so I'm asking you smart people....the book calls for 10w30 I think but the question is full dino oil, full syn oil or that blended stuff ? I've talked with others and they say the use full syn and extend the changes to 5000 miles with no problems ! The extended changes pays for the extra cost !
Any ideas will help....thanks

Ford calls for semi-synthetic.

I hate the K&N oil filters, I had one with a bad back flow valve that sealed it shut.

The motor had no oil and the pressure built up tell the filter blew apart.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or give you a hard time, but why is it that people always seem to think that one bad apple ruins the whole crop?

I had 2 in a row do it, both from the same case.

If you have never had that problem, you should run them.

You are probably right, but I will not run a third one to find out.
