For some unknow reason i glaced at my parked truck which i hadn't driven since last night and it was ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after a brief panic the fire was put out and now i'd like to know why? the master cylinder is shot. is this where the cruise control switch is located? what can i do now? if it is a defected part will ford pay for my repairs? any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

It is the swith that disengages th cruise when the brakes are applied. The circuit is hot all the time. Should they fix it?? Yes.... Will they??? Who knows??? I have a feeling there are going to be lots of lawsuits over this before it is over.......

This recall has been out for some time now. They may not fix the truck if it hasn't been repaired by now.

You may be correct on that. I have read conflicting reports on what years are covered. I know that all 2000' s and the 2001 (Super Crew only) are covered. I'm not sure how far back is covered though.

The 97s arent covered yet. They may or may not cover it, good luck though. When the recalls came out I went ahead and changed my switch chalking it up to $20 is cheaper than the whole truck and besides, if a recall ever does come out than I will get reinbursed and everyone said I was nuts, Thanks for proving that I am not. I sleep better at night knowing that I did everything I could to cover my azz.

Can someone shed a bit more detailed info on this issue? I have a 1998 F250 with the 5.4L, and am VERY interested in this. I'll gladly spend $20.00 if needed.

How do I tell if mine has been fixed ( I bought it used)

Only the SuperCrews were recalled in 2001. They were made at a different plant with a different switch supplier.
It is located on the front of the master cylinder and has a 2 wire plug on it.

Ford.com has a "owners" site where you can enter your VIN and it will tell you if there are any open recalls for that VIN. You can also go to www.flatratetech.com, to the Ford forum and ask someone there to run a Oasis for you. With Oasis your vehicle will show any repairs done by Ford as well as all open and closed recalls. You will have to post your VIN for this as well. The Ford owners site works great for just checking for recalls and you know right now, with flatratetech you will have to wait till someone gets a chance to run it for you and then post it.

After researching the problem it can happen on some models from 1992 but for F150s from 1996 are the most at risk. Ford is not claiming any responsiblity telling people to call their insurance company. As for the three people that have died so far because their truck or expedition caught fire in their garage, there is a law suit in the works, but Ford is saying it's not their fault ( which i guess they must ) but watching my truck spontaneously catch fire it is a serious defect. if you have a 1996-2003 ford, better go to the dealer and pay the $23 and get the CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH replace. you'll sleep better. as for me i have't pay about $1K to replace all the wires and master cylinder. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANT TIME!!
