Battery Isolator or Switch?

Battery Isolator or Switch?
Hi,
I am thinking about installing a winch on my 78 F-350 and was told it would be best to also install an auxillary battery to keep the winch from draining the main battery.I have been scanning the net trying to find info on how to hook up the aux battery, but have not found much pertaining to Ford, but a lot about Chevy. What I have noticed is that most of the articles mention installing a battery isolator which protects the main battery from going dead. Other articles say just put a switch between the main and aux batteries, and when the winch is going to be used just flip the switch to disconnect the main battery. Anybody have experience with installing a dual battery set up, and if so would you use an isolator or a switch between the batteries. I don't know how many amps my present alternator is, or how many amps the winch will draw. I picked up the winch at an auction for $35.00 and it is really rough looking, and I was told that it is an 8,000 pound Super Winch, but not sure because the plate / sticker is missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks
