Question Trans Filter Change

Hello all i just got a 2001 ford super crew and it has the 4r70w tanny and i got a filter and was wondering how many quarts of mercon V do i need to get? On my tranny pan there is a yellow tag that has tsb#oo-31, what does this mean? Any info would be very helpful.

Takes about 15 qrts for a full drain, if you just drop the pan, most of the fluid stays in the torque converter. TSB usually stands for tech service bulletin, which means the tranny may have been worked on. Did a quick search but didn't come up with anything for tsb#oo-31

I have a 2001 with the 4R70W. I just did mine and it took 13 quarts. That includes the torque converter drain. Mine has the torque converter drain plug as did most until recently.

my 2001 also has the yelllow service bulletin sticker. when i removed th pan i found a plastic plug and o-ring that i think is installed in the dip stick hole when they build the trans. the line guys crammed the dipstick into the hole and pushed the plug into the pan instead of removing the plug first. i would guess thats what the TSB says.

I have a 2002 sc4x4 7700...It has a 4r100w tranny.I was wondering if the torque has a drain on it .I rotated it around with linited vision and didn't see one.Is it on the front face of the torque or is it on the side and you drain through that rubber plug on the bottom of the tranny under the torqu????I didn't remove the rubber plug to see if there was somthing there or not.

You may not have a drain plug. I think they stopped around 2002. You need to remove the rubber plug in the bell housing to see the pipe plug.

4R70W transmission has a plug in the torque converter- inside the 2 inch aluminum hole pointing straight down. ;lug is a fine thread bolt type, but looks something like an 1/8 inch pipe plug. i pulled mine and it drained 8 quarts from the converter. (2001 crew)

They all have the plug in the pan unless it has had the pan removed. This is standard dipstick installation procedure. It doesn't hurt anything laying in the pan. I would doubt that that is what the TSB tag is for.

I got the filter changed, the pan and magnet were spotless. I ended up with about 4-1/2 getting changed out, my tsb #00-16, how do i tell what this means?

That plug is a factory installed dust plug that keeps crap out while it is still on the assembly line. If you buy used, that is a good way to tell if the tranny filter was ever changed. If the plug is still in the bottom of the pan, either the filter was never changed or the moron at "Iffy Lube" just left it in there. If all you do is drain the tranny and no other part of the system, it takes between 4-6 quarts of fluid. Just did mine yesterday and it took 6 to put it on the halfway mark of the dipstick.
