Is THIS BS or what.....

If you really like cold, I've got the place for you in SW Wyoming, Kemmerer. We are at 7000' elevation and summer lasts 3 months then it's winter again. When it's really cold it doesn't get above freezing for a month. The Wyoming wind isn't as bad as in other parts and you get used to it. There are bigger towns near by and if you need a city Salt Lake is 2 hours away. Gasoline is cheaper here ($2.17 for reg. right now). Houses are low priced. No state income tax. What else would you want?
I can't tell the really good stuff or everybody will be moving here and the natives will blame me for all of the Californians.

Here in Oklahoma my neighbors are fine. I'm up at 7:00AM grinding, and hammering welds, no problems so far.
That sucks about your neighborhood, not being able to maintain your own vehicles! I thought California was the hotrod capitol of the world, and if anything, you'd be able to work on a project vehicle there.

It depends on where you live in Cali.. And unfortunately the only places where you can buy land here at decent prices.... is the middle of the desert. I mean REAL desert. Out in the middle of no place and hotter than Pamela Anderson in a thong..... real dust bowls. Death Valley temps.
So you have to look outside the state for land. Even if you can find land here, they have it so restricted that you can't build on it. Or it can take years to get permits.

Except for the cold part, Texas is the right place to be. Up in the panhandle it gets damn cold but only for little while. A small Texas town can't be beat with a stick. Everybody knows you (and your kids and what they are up to) and even strangers wave. Stay away from the big cities and "Master Planned Communities" and you'll be happier and live longer and may get better looking.

Ahh, good ole Missouri...where your neighbor steps out at 6 am and asks if you need help beating out the dents in your truck while he is tending to the trash fire he has going in the back yard!! I have lived in Missouri my whole life and have NEVER experienced anything like that!! I am only in Rolla to finish school, but I must say there are some of the nicest people here. My neighbor is envious of my beater...BTW he has a lot of nicer tools that he recommends I use!!! I guess I have it good, but it only feels normal to me! BTW, land here on the edge of town goes for $3-5000 an acre. I think this ispretty reasonable. There are a lot of good people left in the world, I guess they just don't live in Cali...except for the FTE'ers, right??

Not that I want to encourage more people to move here, but NM has a lot going for it. Winter is about 3 months, and you can pick your temperature extremes by looking north or south and picking elevation. Being a minimimum of about 4,000 ft and as much as 7,000 or 8,000 ft, summers aren't the blast furnace that Phoenix is. Nights in summers are in the 50's or 60's, great sleeping. Albuquerques's average daily high in dead of winter is 34 deg. Away from towns, land varies from $500/acre in parcels of 50 acres and up to $2,000/acre if water and power are handy. You can still buy brand new homes south of Albuquerque, on 1/4 acre developed land in subdivisions, for less than $70/sf. In small towns along I-25, well away from major towns, you can name your own price.
I drove back thru Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, etc to Illinois this summer and the whole lower midwest has small towns that are shrinking, and bargain homes available. Just depends how isolated you want to be. It isn't all roses but the folks are great and personally I prefer space to having another house 10 ft away from mine (the current standard in Albuquerque developments).

You are discussing one of the reasons I left CA. I live in an association, however, they are quite easy going. For example, we are not allowed to leave inoperable vehicles out for longer than 30 days, yet when I moved in, my 55 sat their for 45 due to the fact my garage was full. Iowa is great!

I feel for you!
You'll need to read your covenants carefully!
I had a nieghbor tell my assoc prez that they didn't want to see my "projects" in my building!
I haven't finished the door on it. You can probably tell from my pic in the gallery that I have a B I G opening! It's basically an airplane hanger and has a 44 x 13 foot opening in the front and a 12x12 rollup in the back....
My original (Assoc approved) plans showed 2 doors in front....a 12ft wide and a double wide door. When I built the thing I left all the front doors off so I could eventually install a 44 foot wide door.
The next door nieghbor now is wondering if I will EVER put a door on it since one of the other nieghbors never has put a door on his "hanger".
The fact is, once a house is built here (1 year limit on time to build) Any other buildings have no limit on time to finish! I could build my front door in 10 years if I want! One of the other board members told me that if I wanted to I could just resubmit the plans with no door at all!(and he said they'd approve it too!!) HAW HAW! .....no...I don't want to completely "p*&^" off my next door nieghbor I guess.....and then....maybe I do!! They didn't have the decency to just come over and talk to me about it over a beer! I hate it when someone goes behind my back and "smiles in my face"!
I'm gonna put a door on the building dadburnit! I don't want to go thru another winter without heat!
I am thinking about putting the F-600 out in front with the left front wheel off for a few weeks though!
Cheers,
Rick
