I have had both the 400 and the 460 in my 78. And I built both up. The 400 was a good motor for low end torque but ran out of breath around 4200 rpm. I had it built up to about 330hp and 420 on the tq. The 460 I have now is built to 445hp and 525 tq. Down low (1200 to 1800 rpm) they both have about the same torque. But my 460 makes hp all the way to 5500 rpm. They both get about the same mileage in my rig (8mpg). It all depends on what kind of power you want for your rig.

I have just spent two hours looking through the past threads on 429 into a 390 spot and have come to the conclusion that if I have a 429, truck mounts for a 460/429 and a bell housing for a 460/429 to fit my manual transmission, I am good to go. Does this sound right to the all mighty forum? I have been blessed with an Arizona 72 f100 thats cherry. One problem with the truck is that when moved to good old Iowa, it froze and something gave way. Antifreeze in the oil pan and locked up tight. A 429 fell into my lap and like the challange. Thanks for any replys or warnings!

Not sure if I read your post right or not but if you have mounts and a bell from a 429/460 or even a 351M/400 you are good to go. If you have mounts from a 360/390 you have to change them out. (It has been a few years since I played so members please correct me if I am wrong)
