Cool f-600 272hd crankshaft

hello ford brothers and sisters
please help if you can.
i recently boo-booed (and boo-hooed) when the harmonic balancer on
my 1956 f-600 (272hd) went bad. that wasnt the bad part.
oh boy!! being the farm dude i am i tried to remove the balancer with a wedge
type tool (wedge between motor mount and balancer) and you may have guessed it. i broke the end of the crankshaft smooth off. so now i need
another motor or a crankshaft and balancer kit. not having any luck finding
either one. has anyone ever welded a crankshaft back together?
if any of you fine ford people have an idea of a solution for my problem
please respond.i will thank you in advance.thank you

also would any modern motor (360,390,351,etc.) fit in the f600 without much trouble.

Wow!

Well.....I'm not going to "dog" you for doing something ....well.... pretty dumb!....Only because I have done things equally dumb.....maybe worse!.....(more than once!!) We usually learn from our mistakes...

Anyway I feel for you...My suggestion is that you should probably just find yourself another engine. A 292 from any pickup 50's-60's would probably be just fine and should bolt right up to your engine mounts and bell housing. I have a 239 V-8 in my 55 F-600. Have a look at my gallery. (what year is yours?) Even a 239 might be ok for what you're doing... You know it would probably be possible to weld it back together....But it would break for sure again!

There is a lot of people here that can tell you how to put a bunch of different engines in your truck. It might get cost prohibitive though.....I think you might have an easier time finding a 292.

Good luck!

Rick

There is a crank pulley/damper on ebay right now. You can even find a complete engine from time to time on ebay.

I just checked and the pulley auction ended with no bids. The item number is
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" height="18" width="105"> <tbody><tr bgcolor="#d6dcfe"><td align="right" nowrap="nowrap">4565907636</td><td align="right">
</td></tr></tbody> </table>
Contact the seller to see if he will sell it or relist it.

Found a Mercury 292 with 4 speed trans located in Texas with bid starting at $150 item number 7991094886

I'm not sure about the 292's except that I believe all the pickup 292's are suitable for the F-600. My F-600 came new with a 223 CU-IN 6! I'm sure any truck 292 will work well and like Roger said there's an abundance of them around including EBAY.

Lot's of info here: http://www.y-blocksforever.com/

Im not aware of any special crank for the HD 272, the forged version didnt come along until the 292 62-4 F600. Ive a 56 F600 in the stable I help maintain and its just a plain 272 with lower compression truck heads.

Check your mains caps and rods, they should be the same as the car 272. Go here for all the tech stuff.
http://www.ford-y-block.com/enginepa.htm

The 272 and 292 use the same crank so it should be easy to find one. The 292 also had a longer and higher production so 292 rebuild parts are more readily available and cheaper.

The FE/FT series will swap in with minimum problems, however the same 50's era 332 from the F800/900 is a drop in. This is a Lincoln derived engine, not a Ford Y Block.

Good luck and happy hunting Farmdude. I found 2 Y-block 292 engines within 20 miles of my house by watching the classified adds on FTE when I went looking. I bought them both and built my engine from the combined parts. If you have a choice try to get a 63-64 292 and it will have a PCV valve instead of a road draft tube.

If you find a junk motor that is locked up, by it cheap for the crank and just rebuild the bottom end of your engine for a quick inexpensive fix.

i found a motor with the ECG stamp on it and removed the crank.the stamp on the crank is EC. dont you suppose the crank will work? the motor i'm working on has the
ECG stamp also.looks like i can get the crank trued, get rod and main bearings
and go to work.what other complications should be considered? im looking for a crank
rebuilder right now. also are the seals and gaskets for the lower end hard to find?

You found yourself another 272. Try Egge Machine or Mummert at www.ford-y-block.com for parts like gaskets.
