The only difference generally between a 390 and 360 is the stroke, which is just crank and rods. Blocks and all interchange, the bore is the same.

Yes, the head will interchange.

It's my understanding 352 fe series engines with 4 barrel intakes had slightly bigger intake and exhaust valves. Also 428 head will interchange and have slightly bigger valves. Police interceptor 427 engines are the best heads. They call them Low riser heads and Hi Riser heads and are a rare find, really rare and very pricey.

Casting on block for years 67-72, will identify what engine size you really have.

How do casting numbers appear?
Most casting numbers are stamped or casted into the part itself, other have the number

If you put 352 or 428 heads on whitch intake do you use? also all i have to do is put a 390 crank in to make it a 390 right?

The intakes are the same for a 360/390. Make a 390 from a 360 by using a 390 crank. The rods (and or pistons) maybe different, not sure. Best to check the FTE engine forums.

Yes, you will need to replace rods and crankshaft.

So the rods are a different length to match the 390 crankshaft`s stroke?

The 390 uses a shorter rod and shorter compression height on the piston to adjust for the longer stroke. The 360 uses a longer rod and taller piston compression height to accomplish it's compression ratio. If you move in a 390 and dont change the rods or pistons, you need super thick head gaskets to thwart damage to the internals. Now, the 390 truck motors were a lower compression unit than the car line motors. The car line used the 360 pistons with the higher compression height to bring the compression of the motor up. So, a 390 crank, 390 rods and 360 pistons are the way to go...

how do you tell the difference between 2 barrel and 4 barrel heads, just by looking that is?

Years back I overhauled what I think was a 360 2 bbl from a 68 Ford Ranger(very sweet truck, wish I had it now). What I seem to remember is that the pistons were stamped 390 4V. Maybe my memory is toast but I am fairly certain that the motor was a 360. Is this possible or not? Don`t think that there is a difference in 2 or 4 bbl heads. Is this correct?
