I would start with ball joints and linkage check, then work up to power steering pump or steering box.

When my box went out, there was no power assist in only one direction. It wasn't intermittent. Just when ever going that one way, nothing but strong arming.....A new box fixed it.

It's the steering box and not an uncommon problem when they get older and worn.

Is your truck a 4x4?

If so you probably need to replace your left and righr outer universal joints.

You probably wondering what the heck I am talking about right about now, but listen I replaced both my box and my pump and never solved the real problem which is the front left and righ universal joints get water in them and rust up which causes the steering to jam up when turning and yes if not fixed eventually will cause the pump or the case or both to fail.

Fix the U-joints first, hopefully you box and pump are still in good condition and don't need replacing.

Hi,
Thanks for the information. Seems to be working great since I changed the box out.
