3.0 Ranger is starting off with a positive reputation.
Catalytic Converters

I just want to know the reason why my 2003 ford ranger 3.0 has 5 catalytic converters? that has to rob horsepower and decrease gas mileage. can i take them all off and replace them with pipe and then put 1 high flow cat on instead. will that mess with smog and the computer or is that safe? what do you recommend for this?

I also had a question about the timing. i wanted to know if i advanced the timing about 3 to 4 degrees, would that help with performance? would it hurt the truck in any way? what about gas mileage?

yes and no, u can pull cats if you put the sensors back in...... i would leave the two little ones where the o2 sensors are... but if u pull them then u will blow o2 sensors like crazy... im having that prob right now... plus pulling them is illegal in some states

so if i leave the two converters that are right after the exhaust manifold and then pull the other three and replace them with pipe and a high flow cat i should have no problems? are the o2 sensors only in those two converters or are they in all 5? will this give me any significant performance or will this make me not pass smog or mess up the computer? thanks for the reply.

i got a 3.0L in my 02 ranger edge. I hollowed out the big cat on it myself. i unmounted it and hammer the comb stuff out. Took about 2 and 1/2 hours total. It wont help performance. It made my truck sound a little better but not much.
