Overheating Trouble
My '93 F150 has been overheating. I think the system needs flushed out but also I think the fan clutch may be bad. My dad and I popped the hood and watched the fan at idle and then gave it some gas to about 2000 rpms. The fan didn't look like it sped up any to cool the engine. How hard is it to change the fan clutch?

Piece of cake 4 bolts hold it to the water pump. You will have to remove the fan shroud to get at it and maybe the radiator but usually you can maneuver it out with the shroud loose, they basically come out together. Loosen the shroud I believe its two bolts and this will give you room to access the fan clutch bolts. with those removed pull out the fan and shroud at the same time. you also may have to move the upper radiator hose out of the way.

Assuming you have a V8 engine, it's easy. The 4.9 you need a special tool to get the clutch off, it's threaded onto the end of the water pump.
From your description, though, it sounds as though you didn't follow the right procedure for checking the fan clutch. You have to block the flow of the radiator and monitor the coolant temp. When the temp climbs to around 200 or so, you should notice a roaring sound as the fan clutch kicks in.
As long as you're going to change the clutch, I would strongly recommend that you do a flush with the prestone kit, change the water pump (don't use a highflow one thinking it will work even better, go with stock), and change the thermostat (use a 195) at the same time. You'll be much happier with the results.
