I may be wrong but the truck motor is built for a good balance of torque & horsepower. Its about the best towing ford motor for its size I've ever owned. They are a pita to work on & this is my only complaint about this motor.
PI (Performance Improved, or something like that) are a slightly reworked heads to clear up some issues on the earlier engines. The PI heads were swaped around 99, I think. If you have them the PI is stamped right on the side of the head. Don't think you can swap 3v heads for the 2v.
The 5.4 is supposedly designed for towing. It generates it's maximum torque at a relatively low rpm of about 1900 rpms. It really works well for towing trailers at highway speeds.
It is made for low end torque. For pulling weight. It's not a high rpm powerhouse due to it's small bore and long stroke. (Over 4") It is still a good running engine for only 330ci.
I have a 2002 E150 Econoline with the 5.4L in it. I don't know about the 1/4 mile times but I don't imagine it would win any races. But, it does run circles around my 1984 F350 4x4 that has a 5.8L in it.
I expected better gas mileage on my 2000 E-150 5.4 compared to my 1989 E-150 5.0 but no such luck. I can easily feel the extra power but at the price of gas right now, I prefer the 89's 18 mpg than the 2000's 15 mpg at highway speeds, but the 2000 is a luxury conversion so I drive it. Either one, at fill up time it's sure hard putting out $75 a pop.
triton_2002: Do all 5.4's after 99 have the PI heads?
(I think PI is Pay Increase because that's what I need to pay for the gas)
Running empty, my 1992 E150 with a 5.0L in it did at most about 18 on the highway. My 2002 E150 with a 5.4L in it does about 20 on the highway when running empty. Both do about 13 when pulling my 2000lb boat. The difference is that the 5.4 has more guts under all conditions.
Yep, 99-03 have the PI heads. These should get better mileage because they make more power and don't have to work as hard to pull the vehicle.
Well, mine doesn't. I travel around 1000 miles on I-57 from Elkhart, IN to Marion, IL and back almost every weekend and I run an average of 75 mph. The 2000 5.4 gets around 15.4 mpg and the 89 5.0 averages 17.8 mpg. I haven't looked but I would guess the 2000 E-150 is heavier than the 89 as side-by-side it looks beefier and maybe longer. Both have overdrive but I don't have any idea of any of the ratios. One difference I know for sure is that the 2000 has a Ford tow package. Maybe that makes a difference?
