Done all kinds of disk brake pads, never done drum shoes.

Anyone out there got a how to with pictures (preferred) on rear drum brake shoes for a '97 F350?

Also curious of common reasons for ABS light to come on. Is it likely the sensor?

 

I cannot speak intelegently about the ABS but I would check the connections of the wires.

On the Drums Though:
I have no diagrams but I can tell you this. Purchase New Hardware. This means springs and clips. I found this out about 3000 miles after I bought my 96 and it wrapped the springs around the drum.

1. Remove both wheels after placing rear end on jackstands.
2. Work both drums off. (They are separate from the hubs. If it is tight you may have to loosen the star wheel. the access is from the rear of the plate.)
3. Using the other side as a reference, begin to remove the tension springs and then the clips that go through the shoe backing plates. Take note the direction of the borrom star wheels orientation.
4. Once the shoes are off, compare the new to the old and install the new adjuster pins. they drive in from the back of the shoe.
5. Using your other side as the reference put the new shoes on with the new hardware and that side is done.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 on the other side now using the clean side and your new experience as a guide.

Other material to get wil be as follows:
2 cans brake cleaner
2 pairs of pliers
a flathead screwdriver
1 good friend to help with the new springs
absence of children for when you hit your knuckles

If you want a diagram, Advance autoparts can print one for free. They also carry the bendix brand of shoes which is the ford factory brand.

 

The ABS is probably the VSS sensor on top of the rear axle. It's a $20.00 part from Ford and takes about 5 mins to change. On my 97 F250 the drum and hub where one piece, but other then that the above instructions sound right on.

 

I thought that my drum and hub were one piece until I realized that the previous owner neglected to do anything with the brakes and they had corroded together. Once I got them off, I dropped the assembly on the pavement and they popped apart. The manuals that I referenced said that they stopped the 1 piece assembly in about 1990. ???

 

I tried everything to get mine apart, but they were definately one piece, my buddy's 95 are seperate, so I guess it's just another one of those things where Ford couldn't make up it's mind and went back and forth between two designs.

My pads are 3.2mm, spec says replace at 3mm. Any chance that the thinckness of the pad triggers the ABS light? I'll look at the VSS sensor.

What do you guys recommend for service manuals?

 

I would try for the HAYNES or the Ford CD manual as the chiltons I have tries to cover the 1980-1996 F150-F350 in a 1.5inch book
