I've been digging in past threads and found conflicting views on when ford went the "PI" heads. I have an 02 f-150 with the 5.4l, can anyone tell me if I have them and how to tell buy looking at the engine? Thanx for any input.
Thanks for the reply, wasn't sure because someone said who acually worked for ford that it wasn't until the middle of 02 the the pi heads were in the 5.4's.
PI heads stand for power improved or something like that anyways both 5.4l and 4.6l engines have them but like I asked wasnt to sure when they were put in them. The 5.4l went from 235 to 265 hp but I dont know the 4.6's numbers.
PI(performance improved) heads were only good for 11hp not 30hp and were introduced in late 98.So not all 99s had them. They were ported different and had bigger valves.A more aggressive pcm tune and cops helped as well.I was around when the lines were built for the 4.6,5.4 and 6.8.The last machine i worked on was the 04 front clip
cheers
No problems that didn't already exist as far as i know. Also i don't know when the milling snafu on the pass side block was fixed.Gaskets were revised to fix it in a recall and then theres the spark plug blowout issue. For some reason i think the piston dish was also revised to retain compression but I'm not sure.Remember there are two totally different lines of the 4.6 and 5.4 and many deviations over the years so you have to find info specifically on your motor. The bar code sticker on the driver side valve cover is the best place to start imho and your tune code is on the pass door frame above the hinges.
