Tire Pressure Idiot Lights

LAST EDITED ON 25-Jul-01 AT 11:31 PM (EST)[p]On the news I just saw something about the government trying to make it a requirement for all cars to have a tire pressure warning light. What is wrong with this picture? It seems to be while technology is getting more advanced and complex, we are making people stupider. What ever happened to good old routine checks and maintainance that your owners manual talks about? And the little sticker located on the door that tells you what your tire pressure is supposed to be at? The government and large corporations must be trying to force us into de-evolution by making everthing so simple and idiot proof. It just seems to be making people lazier. What is this world comming to?

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

They need the light because people don't know you should maybe READ the owner's manual or the sticker. Its kind of like asking someone what it means to go into 4WD and them saying that means all the tires stop at the same time.

LAST EDITED ON 25-Jul-01 AT 11:52 PM (EST)[p]i hate it...automatic this, push button that, dont get me wrong, technology is good, but its different in vehicles, thing like tire pressure idiot lights, auto push button 4wd that sometimes wont engage and is much weaker than an iron all gear tran case, not to mention the ifs that rides as stiff as a straight axle but has the strength of a go cart rear end(i bet a go cart rear is stronger), sorry for the venting, but im just looking into the future, what happens when everything is converted over to ifs and electronic plastic disposible "trucks", and parts are impossible to find for my old fords, ahhhhhh i know the super duty is a good truck, but i wonder how long they will keep their straight axles and other strong stuff, i know dodge is getting rid of their straight axle fronts to make them into yuppie trucks too top go with ford and chevy 1/2 tons. seems like all thats left is jeep, how long will that last?............

Tire Pressure Idiot Lights

I hear ya 85. I think instead of idiot lights they should use that technology and wire 60,000 volts to the drivers seat so when something goes wrong they will have to do something about it or else. kind of like doing something wrong when you were a kid and paying the price. I have to say I have my old toys, My 78 f-150 4x4 and my 83 V8 ranger, I love um to death becuase I basically built both myself. But my 90 bronco II has got to be the best of both worlds for commuting and my everyday purposes. Its got power locks, windows, AC, cruise and all the goodies like that. Plus I still have my favorite which is a manual tranny with manual lockouts and transfer case. The components may not be as strong and it may not be that fast, but it gets the job done and unlike my toys, keeps me out of trouble.

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

It's a sad truth, but the world is full of idiots. It seems strange that we would be making "progress" toward making it easier for them to be on the road.

This post reminded me of something I heard recently at an oil/lube place. I usually do my own oil changes, but was running short on time so I dropped in to have it done. Also in the waiting room was a lady getting her oil changed. It was a pretty new car and she comented how important it was to change the oil in a vehicle. I nodded and passed it off as small-talk. Then she proceeeded to say that her last car stopped running after about 18,000 miles because, as she said, "they never told me to change the oil!"

I was glad that I got back out on the road before she did. I think if any more idiot lights are added to cars, they should be on the outside, warning everyone else of the idiot behind the wheel.

Our driver licensing laws permit any idiot to drive. Unfortunately the idiot above had an idiot teacher her to drive and the teacher didn't explain that vehicles require maintenance and then show her what to do, etc.

All of our vehicles are stick shifts and I've started teaching the grandkids how to drive. They get to drive my '66 Galaxie 7 Litre after they can drive the others and they can answer some basic maintenance and responsibility questions. Only one of the girls has bothered and she loves driving the big red hot rod. The others are jealous but to lazy to bother. Guess whose at the top of the list to inherit it?

My wife accuses the other kids of not being "drivers"; they are only "pointers".

Isn't the "CHECK ENGINE" idiot light a government (EPA) mandated light? The worst idiot light of all, though, is an idiot light disguised as a guage--supposedly on late model Ford oil pressure units! We'd be better off with a light as the pseudo-gauge tells you no more and when there is a problem it won't wake you up like a light will. Ideally, I'll take a gauge with a light. But if the government wants to force us to have low tire pressure gauges (is this a response to Firestone/Explorers?) for safety, yet why did the government allow manufacturers to go back to the old, unsafe single reservoir master cylinder--I know, my line burst last fall and I had NO brakes! Typical of the government, though, as I bought a new toilet and I am Federally restricted to 1.6 gallons per flush, yet I can turn around and pump 100 gallons of water all over my lawn and they wouldn't stop me.

I used to work at a gas station while attending college, we had one lady come in and say that she had a low air light on her dash that would stay on. I gave her a blank stare and told her all her ties looked ok to me, then she showed me the light, this was almost 4 years ago. I checked all her tires and one tire was at 30lbs, aired it up to 35 and the light went out!

This may be a good idea but what happens during the winter months? I usually check my tires every time I change oil.
