Now thats the idea I like most of all...a braket off of the under side of the bed. So far as lighting is concerned, http://www.customdynamics.com/illumi...nce_plates.htm has some great options for both motorcycles and cars and trucks.
Meanwhile autoloc.com offers a hidden license plate kit that swings the plate out of view for "that extra clean look."

I have mine mounted about 1/4" off the back surface of the bed. This has the top bolts just touching the painted area. So,not wanting to scratch the paint, I put a 1/8" rubber pieces in between the paint and the ends of the bolts. That puts a slight tension n the bracket that keeps it from vibrating and it holds the rubbers in place. (Ok this is your chance George to jump with the prophylactic jokes). The bracket has a built-in light on top. Also, since I wrote the previous post, I saw somebody's gallery. They made a cool license bracket that attached to the bumper bracket. He offset it so that it almost lined up perfectly with the left-hand edge of the tailgate. I don't know about the wiggle factor though. Jag

Ouch! The auto-sized light offered by customdynamics.com is $100. There is a new LED light with a stainless steel housing on ebay (closing today) for $13.50 Buy It Now + $4.30 shipping. There are others on ebay for less than $10.
That position below the tailgate will not work for my truck. The lower half of the plate would be obscured by the bumper.

John, I like the bracket you made also, however several of us have a tucked in rear bumper and that won't work. Great idea though.... I know CA has stricter laws than most States, but I'm not running a front plate nor do I have a light on my back plates. I've never had a police officer confront me about either one. Is this really a big problem that needs concern? My solution for the front plate is to put it under the front seat. If you get pulled over, just pull it out show the officer

LED License Plate Light Stainless Steel "Waterproof" Item number: 4563685066
They are 12 Volt and claim to be superbright, so they may be bright enough at 6 Volts.
I think 6 Volt systems are fine for running stock electrical. If you start adding stuff, 12 Volts is nice. If you want to run a lot of add ons, you will probably want an alternator rather than a generator. I am running a 12 volt generator system. It certainly does crank fast compared to 6 Volts

Wow, no comments from George. He is really showing a lot of self restraint!
I got the rubber material at the local hardware (Osh) but any of them prob have it. ($.50) On the twelve volt light, I would think that the 7 volts your gen puts out is good enough. The light will be dimmer, (unless you can find a 6 volt replacement bulb) but I am sure that Ax is right. The fact that you have a light should be fine. I see many new model cars where the LP lights are barely lighting up anything.
And Ed, you are right about the tucked bumpers. I was thinking of raising mine, but then I would have the license placement to deal with again. So I guess it will have to stay in the stock position. Good luck with it, Jag

I'm lucky in that my motor starts immediately with the slightest touch on the starter button. Not a problem with starting.
But I am having a hard time finding a license plate light with bracket that is 6v. Perhaps as noted I could try running a 12v plate/light.
I found 6v LED replacement 1157 bulbs from "superbright LED". Kinda interesting. But no one selling these plate lights knows what bulb numbers are being used to cross reference to a 6v bulb.
I think I will try a few of the LED license plate frame bolt kits in 12v. The ones with the lights shining down instead of straight out. Instead of drilling into somewheres to mount a light fixture.
