Question Big job or not????

Hello
I think my rear diff. bearings need to be change, the one comming from the drive shaft. There is a small hum when I press on the gas pedal on the highway. Now some people tell it is a big job and others say no, also what is this when they say you will need to repack the diff. and need special tools and the specs. My truc is a f150 xlt 1999 with 240000 Km.

Thanks for the reply

Now this does depend on your impression of what is "BIG".
I know some dirt track racers that can do it in an hour.
But for you, it's gonna be longer.
You might be money ahead to take it to the garage with the best reputation.

You have to pull the axles, then the carrier bearing retainers come out, then the Ring n' differential gear set all come out at once.
Then it gets tough. You remove the big nut holding the pinion gear in, and take the Bearing off, replace the bearing.
Then it gets tougher.
You have to use Prussian Blue, to wipe in the Ring gear to the Pinion gear.
All this is in a book.
For Crackers it's a two day job. For an experienced guy it's only a couple hours.
Do it wrong.....hooo boy, that can be expensive.

Well, I'll chime in here. Like many things, it's not hard IF you know how to do it. And it IS critical to get the gear clearances right, as Thudpucker said.

Since you apparently don't know how to do it, you'd probably be better off going to whoever in your area has worked on differentials the most. Sure you could learn, but it's not likely to be a good use of your time.

If you do decide to do get a manual and read the whole process over and ensureyou have all the special tools and parts required. before you start or after reading decide if you want a shop to fix.
