Diesel Automatic vs. Manual

I've heard a lot about how the new Torqshift 5-speed automatic is just as good hauling big loads as the manual, and, obviously, a lot easier to drive. Unfortunately, I can't afford such a new truck, So I'm looking back to the days of the 4 speed autos. I know they used the 4R100/E4OD behind the 7.3, but I haven't really heard how these autos compared to a manual as far as strength and longevity when pulling big loads (for instance, a 35 ft. fifth wheel). I know manuals are being phased out because of the newer, better automatics, but what about the older ones??

The E4OD isn't a bad unit as far as automatics go, but it's still nowhere near as reliable as a stick.

If you're going to shop for one, make sure that it's been well maintained, especially if it's been towing a lot. If someone looks at you funny when you want to see receipts for fluid changes, walk away.

A rebuild of that tranny can cost anywhere from $1500 to $3000.

I know. I priced one for my Expedition (just in case). To me, it's good for 1/2 ton-sized vehicles, but something else should be used for the bigger trucks.
