sloppy steering

i have a 76 f250, 4wd with the power assist power steering. It is pretty sloppy and I was thinking about adjusting my steering box. Does anyone have any tips/instructions on this or any other ideas. Thanks
Joel

Use the <SEARCH> function for info. There is a lot of it here on various techniques used on these steering systems.

Thanks for using FTE!

I have found that majority of the time it is not the power unit but the rubber absorption gasket that is the problem. This little rubber gasket has been the cause of more nightmares then a failed trogon. Follow the steering sector shaft off the firewall until you find the connecting knuckle. The absorption gasket is the rubber gasket you see there. Hold the lower and upper sectors and try and give them a twist. You shouldn’t have more then 1/8” free play. If you do its time for a change.

wayne, those trucks don't have absorption gasket on them.

kelsey, there is a u-joint up by the fire wall that does get
slack in them and a slip joint down by the steering box that
gets slack in them also. check those two first, before you try
to adjust the steering box. good luck glenb

I have found the same problem with my 77 F150 4 by 4 which after inspecting was the assembly coupler that looks like the u- joint in the steering shaft between the column and the steering box. Good luck finding a good used one, I found out that Ford quit making that part for replacement in Aug. 2001 and Im not sure where you can find an after market. I found one new one for $ 611.00 at a dealership. Good luck
