Chevys employee discount results

Since Chevy got their employee discount pricing out before everyone else, it sure reflects in the June sales numbers. Check out the June 2004 sales for the silverado compared to the June 2005 sales. I dont beleive my eyes! If this keeps up, the silverado will definately hold the sales crown this year.

Almost DOUBLE last years figures for June...
That is amazing.

Why would Dodge be down 10% YTD though?
Both the Nissan and the Toyota are improving (rapidly), and the Ranger, well...

Actually, it is more than double what they sold last year.
June 05 ~ 109,000
June 04 ~ 51,000

Like I've stated before.

Loyalty doesn't drive the automotive market - the pocket book does.

We can debate all we want about which brand is better but to most people all brands are similiar enough that they really don't care as long as they percieve themselves getting a deal and with GM they have been.

That could be true, but the discount could have also just driven future chevy buyers to buy sooner. I also read this possibility in an article a few weeks back. If this is the case, expect a slow couple of months for chevy when the discount ends. Same probably goes for Ford and Dodge now since they just started their own employee pricing.

I really don't think that is entirely true. Like I stated most people don't care a whole lot. It's true future GM sales will be affected but Ford and Chrysler will also feel the effect. It's not like somebody who was border line that went out and bought a GM product is going to go out and purchase a Ford now that they have there deal running. So in essence Ford lost that sale. GM was first to the punch the others are just reluctantly follwing suit. Now with that said GM is in a sad state of affairs - this was just a case were the consumer got to benefit.

I read this morning (maybe in the Detroit News Online) that GM had few conquest sales with their promotion. The trade-in mixture was only slightly down for GM products based on past history. This indicates to me that the buyers were only moving up their purchase a few months and future sales will suffer. I think Ford and MOPAR will have the same experience.

I wish I'd have kept track- we saw quite a few conquest trades. What we didn't see was many Ford people shifting over, but a lot of Chrysler and import stuff came in though. At one point we had 6 or seven very late model ('04-'05) Dodge Ram's on the lot.

Sales don't mean much when they are losing money on each unit.
"General Motors's "Employee Discount for Everyone" program sent the automaker's sales soaring last month to the highest monthly total in two decades, but GM, the world's largest automaker, just posted a first-quarter loss of $1.1 billion compared with a profit of $1.2 billion in the year-ago quarter."

I think there are typo's and meant either 2nd quarter or 1st half. Either way that's losing a lot just to move product.

No typo, unfortunately. The profit statement happened before the employee incentive was launched, so it isn't indicative of how that will affect GM's profit/loss statements for the upcoming quarter.

It may not be as bad as you think... They dumped some of the incentives and more importantly, they are getting finished inventory (which is very hard to disassemble and use on something else ) off the lots. Look at how many companies sell on Ebay to get rid of overstock / refurbs.

Gotta give em credit for a great Marketing idea!

Trunkmonkey update- we walked into the GM promo with 53 D-maxes in stock, plus about 70 gas Silverados. As of tonight, we've got 9 (that's right- 9) Silverados in stock, and the lot looks like a tornado blew through it.

I didn't think GMs deal was a good deal. I purchased an '04 work truck last fall for 16K from Ford. More or less the same truck from chevy was 18.5 when i priced it two weeks ago.

As a result of Ford's jumping on the employee discount and keeping their existing incentives, I purchased another F-150 for my personal use. I hadn't planned on buying a newer (let alone brand new) truck for myself until next year but more than 9k off the sticker provided enough motivation.
