ok this is to anyone who will need to remove the fan clutch on a 1984-1996/7 effer. appearently ford, in there infinite wisdom, changed the size of the fan clutch nut and water pump in 1992.

so if u ever go for a fan clutch wrench set make sure u either get the universal set, with the 3 or 4 different sizes or if u have a 84-91/92-96.

long story short i have found this out the hard way twice.

 

op-i...now you tell me....last week changed 91 fan clutch,,,,the loaner tool from the parts guys/ only had two wrenchs for the 4.9. Would have worked ; But the wrench for the clutch nut marked 1-7/16 inch was really 1-5/8 inch...yes it slipped off and I gave blood . took off one fan blade bolt, got large cresent to hold,,,,it's the blood sweat and gettin it done that has me hooked...

 

Good thing I read this today. I have to do this tonight. Just picked up the set of tools from Autozone.

 

Boy I'm glad my 1981, clutch fan comes off with four tiny bolts, and no special tools required.

I wonder why ford changed how they bolted on so much?

 

84 recived a vicus type fan clutch. urs is just a standard fan IIRC.
