Mixed messages. What mpg should a 7.3L w/4.10 rear get?
I have researched the threads and see results on both sides. Some with a 4.10 rear say they are getting 17+ mpg and that is normal. Others that 12-14 is normal. Results are with the trucks unloaded and as best I can tell highway mileage.
Which is it? I am getting 12+ actual unloaded. So I fall in with the second group. I don't want to chase a problem that is not there.
Now mine is an 01 F-350 CC DRW with an 8' bed. Would that cost me 4-5 mpg?
This is highway mileage holding the rpm's at about 22-2300 and speed at 65-70 mph.

i have 1996, 8', ext cab, 285's , unloaded, auto w/ 3.73's
@ 75 i am only 2000 rpm.
i would highly doubt getting more than 14 w/ those gears. but i have alot of hills and twists here in MA. so maybe on the flat.
my buddie has 02 w/ 6spd and 4-11's. he gets 14 @ best.

It seems that 2000 RPM's is the magic number. If you can stay under 2000 then the mileage is there. Above 2000 it goes away quickly.
Just a suggestion:
My MPG went up 2.4 miles per gallon when I added a chip with an econo setting.
I have 37" tires with 3.73's and still get 16 on Econo setting.

I have a 95 f350 cc DRW long box with the auto and 410's 235/85's ... the worst tank I've gotten is 15.8 and the best is 19.7 ..... this is combination city/highway and I "try" and keep the revs at 2000-2200......
BTW, these are Canadian gallons that are larger than American ones
My truck is in the shop as we speak getting 355's installed, I hope to see both the mileage and drivability improve..

afine point,
I don't think you have a problem. In town with a lot of stop and go I get 12-13 +/-. On the highway I get 15-16 +/-. With that said, you must look at the sigs of the posters. I have a SRW with a 3.73, BUT I have a 4WD which also lowers the mileage. So really we are not that far apart. Always try to compare apples to apples.

I have a '97 crew cab long bed srw 2wd with a fiberglass cap and 4:11 gears and no mods at all. I have about 105k on the odometer. I just got back from a trip where I averaged about 17.25 mpg with just luggage and three people on board. That is about 1.5 mpg lower than I got on my last trip a year ago. I was running between 65 and 75 mph. My tach reads 2500 rpm at 75 mph. Funny thing is I get about the same mileage around town where I seldom tach higher than 1500 rpm or so. I do tend to have a very light foot and seldom stomp on it.

He has his own re-programmed PCM's as well if you want to keep your stock PCM. Or he can reprogram your PCM for econo mode.
He is the flavor of the week right now with much of the PSD community.
I want to clear something up. I managed 18 MPG (hwy) before I lifted my truck with a BD chip in 75 HP setting (3.73 gears). When I lifted my truck and went to the 37" X 17" tires I went down to 14 MPG. I switched my chip to the DP Tuner chip and got back to 15.94 MPG.
