Unhappy

Just go the new torque installed. Didn't fix the noise. Mechanic thinks it may be the transmission. $$$ I guess I will have to park it for a while so I can save my pennies.

Mechanic installed new torque converter, did not fix problem. May be transmission. Does anyone know if you can pull the transmission and still start the engine? That would isolate it to the transmission or engine. Mechanic also thought it could be a broken crank, but it still runs great. I drove it home and punched it. It picked up speed good and ran 75 without any issues. It just has that loud noise like someone is hitting it with a hammer but smooths out with faster idle.

I am dealing with the exact same issue. I had my TC replaced Friday and it sounds exactly the same. I am now thinking that the flex plate has a hairline crack or is out of true. I hope that is what it is. They will have to drop the tranny to see. I am not real happy about now. lol

I pulled my transmission myself and found my flexplate had crack around the inside about 75%. After replacing it, it sounds as good as ever. I can't believe the mechanic didn't check it while replacing the torque converter. I have since found a better mechanic.

I am thinking the same thing about my mechanic. I am not a mechanic, but it seems to me that with the problem I was experiencing, they would have checked the flex plate very completely. I just dropped it off and while there they put it on the lift, removed the cover and examined it with a flashlight. Lo and behold, there was visible evidence of a problem. Seems to me that if they can see the problem while it is on the lift with a flashlight, they damn well could have seen it when it was on a bench being bolted together. I am looking forward to seeing how the bill is written up for this one. I am supposed to get it back tomorrow. They are telling me that they are hopeful the shaft isn't damaged by all the rattling around that has occurred.

I am looking at doing the same thing, pulling the tranny out and see what's causing all that knocking. Did you have to use any specialty tools to do the job, and also what type of hoist/support did you use to pull the tranny out?

Nothing special. I used a floor jack with a piece 2'x2' of 3/4" plywood bolted on and a chain to steady the transmission. Worked great. You just need to pull the transmission back a couple of feet to give yourself some room to get in there.

Read this thread before you proceed!!!

Read this thread before you do anything else.
What I want you to see is the posts by dodgedh2 detailing the findings that he came up with concerning a cracked flex plate and the TSB that he wrote about it.
The topic was on an E4OD, but there is very little difference between the E4OD and the 4R100 transmission.
