Rear wiper has quit

Hey!

Our 2000 Expy. E.B. has quit wiping the rear window. Washer still squirts, and if it's real quiet or I'm right by the door when it's on, I can hear a very quiet "bop.....bop.....bop" like something in there is trying to work on the intermittant time cycle, but the arm doesn't try to move.

I'm thinking there is an electrical contact problem somewhere in the system that keeps it from coming on when the window is up, but I really have no idea.

It was off-and-on for a while, sometimes it would work again if we opened and closed the window or door firmly, but now ... nothing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

-Sam

Do a search on rear wiper, there was a recent topic covering this about a month or two ago - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=335705 I had the same problem. Put the wiper on and shake it around - that's what you were doing when you closed the window or door. First time I tried that it came on immediately. Next time it took a lot of shaking to get it going. It's been working on its own since. I expect the problem to return, not sure what the cure is.

Sounds like it is seizing. Take off the wiper arm, and lube up all the rotating parts with a good grease, and then put it back together. That should take care of it.

Hey!

I've tried the wiggling thing but I think we're beyond that, now. Can't get it to come on at all.

I thought about the simple binding/wear issue, but there is NO movement transferred to the arm at all when the switch is on. It definately sounds like a relay is closing, or maybe a small electrical part is operating, but the wiper motor isn't energizing. It's not "trying" to go. Like it's completely disconnected.

I'll have to take it apart and see what's up.

Thanks!

I've got the same issue. I haven't tried fixing it yet, but I remember someone saying it could be a relay for the one direction. The thumping sound is the other relay pushing the wiper arm back again (only it never moved). It was something like that anyway.

Let us know what fixes it.

Thanks,
Sam

I believe that I have read here before that the windings in the motor have "bad" spots, thus causing the intermittant performance. At that time the only repair was to replace the wiper motor. And only from the dealership, $$$$ Sorry,

mine does that too...I have found that if I turn the rear wiper on and go back there and move it, it picks up, usually pretty quickly. If you pull it down or push it up, you can feel it pop, almost like it is re-engaging or something. Feels like a bad spot in the motor...

I had the problem also and wrote about the relay being bad the contacts get burnt and gave the bump bump bump sound without moving the arm. Also the rear wiper motors are available from NAPA and AUTOZONE for alot less than the dealers.

Rear wiper fix (if the motor is not burned out)

Just thought I would share my rear wiper story after seeing the thread.
My rear wiper on 2003 Expy quit working (Or rather, I noticed it quit working) a couple of months ago. Took it to dealer for oil change etc, and asked them to look at the rear wiper too. They said that the nut cap had cracked which allowed moisture into the mechinism which caused it to sieze and burn out the motor.... and it is $500 to replace (no repair available).... oh yea, and they had none in stock and would have to order it.
Well, since I mostly drive forward :-) , I declined their kind offer to fix it. I saw the thread on the wiper problem today, and decided to take a closer look at it myself. First of all, it took me all of about 3 seconds to determine that the wiper moter WAS NOT burned out. This I did by simply opening the rear glass and turning on the wiper (you can see the motor cam turning in the door)... So much for the competancy (or perhaps honesty?) of the dealer.
Next I confirmed that the wiper shaft was siezed. so I took the mechanism off of the glass, disassembled it, cleaned it and remounted it.... and it works like a champ.
Good luck all!

Hey

I just had my rear wiper motor replaced. Mine is a 2001 and it was still under warranty and they covered it. I also had 2 COP's and the 2 plugs replaced under warranty at the same time. Hopefully it's good for awhile, warranty ends next month!

Thought I was going to have to replace the wiper motor too. Gave it a good thump (after it hadn't been working about six months), and now it's doing it's job.

I have an '03 that came out of Canada. Apparently the previous owner didn't invest much in car washes. The motor was shot and the teeth on the wiper arm were worn away. Had to replace the whole assembly. Cost about $360. Ouch.

I never had a need for mine . . . If I could do it easily, I'd take it off and "shave" it

I guess it still works :dunno
