Can somebody tell me where the ABS sensors are on a 2002 Explorer?
It's my niece's, the ABS light is on, she had it at the dealer, and they
said it was a bad sensor.

There are three ABS sensors, one each front wheel and one mounted in the rear differential to support both rear wheels. Ford has a problem with the rear sensorand the frequency of failure, high probability this is your problem, and the part costs around $28. If do do a search on this topic you'll see this is a problem. It's easy to replace yourself, the sensor is located on the front of the differential slightly to the right (pasenger) side top, it has a wire connector and is held in by one ten (10) millimeter bolt. It's easy, but a little akward to reach. Good luck.

It must be one of the front wheel sensors. If the one in the rear dif. goes out, will this cause tranny shift problems, and the speedometer problem like the Rangers? Her tranny and speedometer are ok.

 

I have an '02 explorer, ABS light came on, no tranny shift problems or spedo problems, based on info from people on this site I replaced the rear sensor for $28, form Ford and the problem went away. I don't remember any posts on the Explorer forum that indicated tranny and / or spedo problems related to the rear ABS sensor.

If you want more confirmation.... I too have an '02 Explorer 4.6 XLT and the ABS was acting up and showing the trouble light every once in a while. Luckily it was under warranty, but the fix was to replace the rear ABS sensor and no more problem. Nice to know that the part is $28. I have a feeling I will be replacing it again myself in years to come.

 

Just an update, I changed the ABS sensor in the rear diff. , and it fixed the ABS light problem. Thanks again for all your posts!!!

 

if its the rear ABS sensor that is faulty what is the code number that is triggered ?

 

Some parts websites list a left and right rewar ABS sensor. Rock Auto list a differential sensor for the 2002 Explorer. Which is correct ??

Also how much should the sensor cost me ??

 

The one I changed was a rear differential sensor. It was slightly over $28.00 from Ford.

 

I too had to replace the speed sensor on my rear diff. I tried to rent that little gizmo from Auto Zone to check the diagnostic codes, but I discovered that ABS codes don't show up on that tool. I took a gamble, bought the rear sensor from the dealer, crawled under the car, and replaced the sensor. The ABS light went right off.

 

did you have to out the truck on a lift to change it. Also does anyone have the correct part number for the rear diff sensor?

 

It's a little tight, but no. I just inched under it. I basically had the differential at my chest and put my arms around either side of it to get to the sesnor.

 

i have been quoted 3 different prices for the rear ABS sensor .. $20.16, $30.00 and $106.78. The high quote was for part number 2L2Z-2C190-AB. Was that dealer quoting me a price for the wrong part ? The low quote $20.16 would not provide me with a part number - said it was against policy. Only thing I could figure was that they were quoting an aftermarket part price?

 

I never got a part number from them. I just went to the parts dept and told them I needed the speed sensor that goes on top of the differential. I think it cost me around $31.00 after tax.

Oddly enough, they gave me the wrong part the first time around, so if you can pull the part out and use another car to get to the dealer, I'd take the old part with you. It's much harder for them to screw up if you have the actual part out of you car.
