Question

Hey Ford owners, this is my first post but I cant figure out where to post my question so here it is.....Im trying to chop off the top of my 89 bronco fullsize, I looked and it looks like its just a few screws holding it on. Also I would like to be able to re-attatch it when I have my 2 kids in the truck. Any info on this topic would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

GO SPURS GO!!!

Welcome to the site

As per my reply in the other thread.

This would best be asked in the truck Tech forums.

This one being the Big Bronco forum.

are you talking about removing the rear cargo top or the actual top over the driver/passenger.

Spurs? You must live here in San Antonio.Maybe we'll run into each other sometime. If your talking about the top on back you may have some plastic trim to take off and then there are bolts to remove but when I take mine off I have a friend help as it is heavy. Installation is reverse of removal.

Im talking about the top of the cargo area, also cant figure how to get the back window to go down in order to remove the top. I removed the access panel and depressed the switch in the middle/bottom of the tailgate but it still wont go down. Dont know if window motor is broke or if its just not getting power. Anyways to figure that out? Thanx.

P.S. Ya, I live in San Antonio, near Sea World.

you should be able to lower window either by the switch in the cab or from the key on the tailgate. if the tailgate is open or not shut properly the glass will not go down.

Forgot to ask. Does taking off the top ruin the seals, or will it be exactly like it was before removal? Dont need water drippin in when it rains right on top of my sons(and soon to be born daughters) car seat.

I thought the key just locks and unlocks the tailgate. How does it help the window go down?

why would the tailgate need a lock if the window is up? there is no way to open it from the outside.
if you turn the key and hold either way it will go up or go down. if it does nothing then your motor may be shot

and yes i you take the top off for the first time. it will need new seals when it comes time to reinstall it otherwise it will leak big time

I took mine off for the first time last week. I will put it back on this evening. Is there anything special about putting it back on? Mine did not have any of the interior trim and had only 5 bolts holding it on. Should I put any "Protectant" spray on the seals first?

No you dont need a new seal,Mine is the same ,I've had it off and on and never had a leak,as for Jems question, mine also only had five bolts, three on top and one on either side.It held fine but it should have thirteen bolts and clips and two guide pins,at least thats the way my 82 is,look at Jeffs Bronco Grave Yard and you will find they have the bolts and clips for about $40.00 +shipping.

Bronco chop top

I was getting ready to take the rear window down the hard way since the switch didnt work(I swear it didnt work when I tried) and I had just removed the access panel when my buddy showed up to help me with the top. He just walked over, pushed the switch and the window went down! I dont understand, does he have the magic touch or something? Anyway we started taking the top off and it took about an hour from start to finish. Well you guys told me I dont need new seals so Ill take your word for it. Took it off road after to see how it feels with no top. Excellent.
