I have a 97 (f-150 lariat) a/c not working, tried to charge & it won't take it, noticed the compressor isn't kicking in. How do I check the compressor & or clutch to find out what is wrong?
Got my truck in 98 with 50,000 miles and now have 225,000. I love my truck and will drive it with-out a/c but it isn't as much fun. thanks for the help.

 

start by checking the pressure switches to see if they are closed, also check to see if your plug to the clutch is not loose or has power.

 

If you have lost most/all of the charge, the compressor will not kick in. This is because the low pressure cutout switch enables the compressor to engage with roughly 45psi in the system. I'd begin service by hooking a gauge to the system before checking the electronics.

 

thanks for the help. I haven't taken the truck to a shop yet. I would like to be able to know what needs repaired before I take it to someone although I hope to be able to fix this myself with the help of this site. I plan on working on it this week-end.
