Oil Change - Amount of oil

I just returned from my dealer who always does my oil changes. This time they put in 7 quarts of oil. When I questioned why the extra quart when in the past it has alway been 6 they say "well that brings it up on the dip stick"

Anyone have any knowledge on this? Is it 6 or 7.

2003 Expy 5.4

Thanks

I have an 04 5.4 and both the manual and dipstick say 6 quarts. I check the oil regularly and I've never had to add any oil in between oil changes.

6 qts....the dipstick is not marked "Full" anymore...It is marked "min/max"....6 qts should put it in the center of the min/max area right where it is supposed to be as per the service manual.

The specs from the Ford service manual for the 2003 5.4 say 6 quarts.

I have a 4.6 manual says 6 quarts. 6 quarts puts in the middle of min max.

My 03 4x4 took six quarts. Whoever is telling you the pan is bigger on a 4x4 is dead wrong about Expeditions.

Ask the service guys if the manuals aren't enough

Service manuals people...read them! 6 qts.
If you put in 7, it will put you at the max line, and that is probably fine, but why waste the extra qt.

You don't even need the service manual -- the owner's manual in the glove box says it clearly enough. But I agree, if someone wants to top off their oil level so it's always at the top of the range, go right ahead. I prefer to have mine between the bottom and middle of the range, just as long as it isn't below the low level.

I went back to the dealer today and talked to the service manager. Bottom line, at least from him, 6 quarts is what is called for but the previous manager instructed his crews to put 7 in to bring it up to the max line on the stick.

He refunded me for the extra quart and assured me it would not cause any seal problems and gave me a free oil change next time around.

I applicate all the info from the board members. This is a great source for information.

Good to hear that the dealer made good on the miscue and you got something out of it.

I always put in 6.5 qts. at an oil change. 6 qts for the pan and half a qt. for the filter.
Currently using Mobil High Mileage (5000 mi) 10w40 for my 2000 eb Expy 5.4 4x4.
