How do you know, when it's ready for a timing chain?

My '88 E-150, 5.0 with 163,000 Mi. Just in the last two weeks, right after I replaced the heater core, thermostat and fan clutch. I noticed an occasional bogging out with the engine, just for a moment, then back to normal running. Yesterday
accelerating from a stop, and making a turn, halfway thru it the engine died. It needed 10 min.
before it would start up and go. Yet no problem
today, except the bogging out.
Tomarrow I'm going to clean the air intakes and check for peoper elec. connections, is it possible
I garred a connection some where?
Any help would certainly be appreciated!
Thanks, Mike

While you did all that work, did you happen to disconnect the battery for any reason ? If so,yes will have to SCRUB the throttle body & plates clean. This happens to all my vehicles, which are all fuel injected, every time I unhook the battery.Apperently, the memory in the processor before was used of constantly adjusting the system to proper driveability. As the new learning process takes place, gum & sludge around the throttle plates disrupts the air flow in such a way that you have bad idle & poor off idle performance, thus a bog.You may want to change the fuel filter also, that way you'll won't have to change it over the winter time.BTW,you may have unhooked avacuum line near the fire wall when you were removing the heater hoses, and, unhooked a sensor near the t-stat housing.
