I solved this problem by removing the belt. Take some sand paper and scuff both sides of the belt. This will make the smooth parts of the belt, which is why it slips and squeals, have more friction thus elimiating that annoying sound.

maybe your belt is either to tight or to loose. when was the belt replaced last, check it for cracks or stress marks.

Is it a v-belt or a serpentine belt? I used a Dayco cogged belt to replace the serpentine belt that was squeaking. It hasn't made a peep.

sorry kbronco whats a v-belt does it do the same thing as a serpintine (thats what i have by the way) or is it something totaly diff

Kemicalburns the altenator pulley is a little bit bigger than the original so i think its tighter, but i thought the self tightening thing is supposed to fix it. i have a 90 302

My old truck had a series of V-Belts on the engine accessories, not a single or dual serpentine. The pulleys were a single deep groove and there were not tensioners on it. Check your tensioner, they wear out. Don't use belt dressing for any reason, search the subject here and you'll see why.

If your using an underdrive pulley on your alternator you would have to go to a longer belt. I dought if the tensioner has enough adjustment for a larger pulley.

I had this problem also....I purchased a Goodyear "Gatorback" belt from my local Autozone instead of the Dayco brand I got last time. It was about $25 bucks as opposed to $17 for the cheaper one.....it works like a charm! It has an odd "staggered" pattern instead of the traditional "v-groove" design of a normal serpentine belt.......
