Question spindle removal from dana 44 '79

I was wondering if anyone knew how to remove the spindles off of a front dana44 from a 79 f100 4x4. I have the hubs off, the backing plates off, the axles out, and the two large nuts off of the steering joints (also, what are these joints called?) Do these joints press out? It looks like there is an internal nut that has to come out. If that is so, where can you buy the socket to remove it? Thanks for any help you can give.

It sounds like you already have the spindles off, They are the part the bearings slide over.

I think you are trying to remove the balljoints, They will need to be pressed out with a balljoint press, or I have seen them removed with a good air hammer.

tellico is right, you're talking about the ball joints!

the spindle has 5 bolts holding it and the brake caliper bracket on the outer knuckle. you had to remove the spindle to remove the axle shafts.

how detailed do you wanna get?
-----------------------------------------------------
Raise and support the front end on jackstands.

Remove the spindles and left and right shafts and joint.

Remove the tie rod nut and disconnect the tie rod from the steering arm.

Remove the cotter pin from the top ball joint stud. Remove the nut from the top stud and loosen the nut on the lower stud inside the knuckle.

Hit the top stud sharply with a plastic mallet to free the knuckle from the axle arm. Remove and discard the bottom nut. New nuts should be used at assembly.

Note the positioning of the camber adjuster carefully for reassembly. Remove the camber adjuster. If it's hard to remove, use a puller.

Place the knuckle in a vise and remove the snapring from the bottom ball joint. Not all ball joints will have this snapring.

Remove the plug from C-frame tool T74P-4635-C and replace it with plug T80T-3010-A. Assemble C-frame tool T74P-4635-C and receiving cup D79T-3010-G (Bronco, F-150 and 250) or T80T-3010-A2 (F-250HD and F-350). on the knuckle.

Turn the forcing screw inward until the ball joint is separated from the knuckle.

Assemble the C-frame tool with receiving cup D79P-3010-BG on the upper ball joint and force it out of the knuckle.

Always force out the bottom ball joint first.

Clean the ball joint bores thoroughly.

Insert the lower joint into its bore as straight as possible.

On the Bronco, F-150 and F-250, assemble the C-frame tool, receiving cup T80T-3010-A3 and installing cup D79T-3010-BF onto the lower ball joint. On the F-250HD and F-350, assemble the C-frame tool, receiving cup T80T-3010-A3 and receiving cup D79T-3010-BG on the lower ball joint.

Turn the screw clockwise until the ball joint is firmly seated.

If the ball joint cannot be installed to the correct depth, you'll have to realign the receiving cup on the tool.

On all models, assemble the C-frame, receiving cup T80T-3010-A3 and replacer T80T-3010-A1 on the upper ball joint.

Turn the screw clockwise until the ball joint is firmly seated.

If the ball joint cannot be installed to the correct depth, you'll have to realign the receiving cup on the tool.

Place the knuckle into position on the axle arm. Install the camber adjuster on the upper ball joint stud with the arrow point to positive or negative as noted before disassembly.

Install a new nut on the bottom stud, finger tight. Install a new nut on the top stud finger tight.

Tighten the bottom nut to 80 ft.lb.

Tighten the top nut to 100 ft.lb., then, (tighten) advance the nut until the cotter pin hole align with the castellations. Install a new cotter pin.

Again tighten the bottom nut, this time to 110 ft.lb.

Install the remaining components
