Difference in harmonic balancers?

I was looking at a 1957 Sunliner and a 1962 truck the other day and noticed the harmonic balancers seemed to be different. Both were supposedly 292's and the 1957 had a large weight as the balancer where the 1962 truck did not. The truck balancer appeared to be made as part of the crank pulley. It certaintly did not have the larger weight like the Sunliner. I had never noticed this before so I checked out some other Y's and noticed they all had the larger balancer.

Was there a change in the type of balancers in later Y-Blocks?

Good question. I also would like for someone to describe all the different balancer variations and their years/applications.

Three different setups are shown in the parts illustration for the crankshaft in Ford cars. I have a 1955 and a 1957 illustration and they are the same. First is a single pulley damper for cars without power steering. Second is like the first but has a bolt on pulley that provides a 2nd pulley for cars with power steering. Third is the 292/312 Tbird engines with 2 pulleys in a one piece part. Truck engines had a different damper in 1954/55 with 2 pulleys, a narrow and a wide. The wide belt is on the outer pulley and ran the high mount fan only. Later truck engines used a fan on the waterpump pulley like the cars and only had the single pulley damper. That is all I have been able to find info on.

There was also a 2-groove version of the bolt-on passenger pulley, giving a total of 3 belt grooves on the damper.

That T-Bird pulley must show up on a lot of '55-'57 motors. I have seen a lot of that one and it is the one that prompted my question. I was afraid I was missing something. It seems like I see the single pulley on later motors more often. Thanks.

CS and PS pulleys

I posted illustrations from Ford manuals in my gallery from 1954 to 1957 showing crankshaft and power steering pulleys. Power steering brackets varied a little year to year. Album is called Pulleys. Haven't been able to find any illustrations showing A/C setup. I guess they could have run it with the power steering belt.

I also show some pics of the pulleys I pieced together on my 292. 3 grooves on the crank and 2 grooves on the waterpump with power steering pump.

Unhappy To Muddy the Water?

I've been gathering parts the last 2 Yrs for a 292 build and picked up a 3 groove Harmonic Balancer / Crank Pully, a 3 groove Water Pump Pully, and a 2 groove Gen. I assumed when I bought them that these must be from a late model Y-Block with factory Air?

I still havent beeen able to find a belt diagram.

It's one Puzzlefutz after another with these old Y's, for the rest of them, they could have had a V8 David

Deuced, I did see an Edsel once about 2 years ago that had the A/C with a 2 groove Gen. Wish I had a pic of it. It looked stock.

Wink Good Lead

Rgr. Yea, Edsel; rich mans Ford, there's a starting place to look for a belt diagram. Those Edsel guy's are a well organized bunch of collectors.

Thx. David
