04 5.4L 24V Fram oil filer help

The FRAM catalog said PH8A or PH2. PH8A with standard threads or PH2 with metric threads. How do I know which one to use. I bought the PH8A but when I took off the old filter from a oil change shop it was the PH2.

Will both work? Why would there be 2 different filters. Thanks in advance for the help.

There is usally only one 'correct' filter. That said, yeah, a lot of filters are the same in many ways. A PH43 is a 'sawed off' PHAa originally developed for the Mopars that had no room in the front. A PH16 was an even shorter version.
Personally I would skip the Fram brand, go with the Motorcraft if you can, very cheap at WalleyWorld or most other places. Fram was good in the eighties, but has gone down hill a lot.
On metric thread, because there are so few turns, and the thread is so coarse, you can get away with a lot of variance. Like using a 17 wrench on a 3/4 or a 14 on a 9/16.
The most important part of the filter is the drainback valve, etc. inside. If that works on your application, the thread fits tightly, and the seal meets, you can use a lot of different filters. Still would not do this. These motors are not cheap, and why take a chance on the dealer making an issue.
For two to four dollars you can get the right filter.
Best of luck
Chris

The Motorcraft filter for your truck is an FL 820-S. The cross reference on the Fram web site to replace the FL 820-S calls for the PH2.

i agree with chris...especially while the truck is under warranty. the dealers are the nicest guys in the world when you buy the truck...but wait until an engine blows and see how quick they try to avoid paying out. they attempt to blame everything on you, and if you cant produce proof of maintenance you got an uphill battle. A friend of mine had a headlight that kept shorting out, and they tried to avoid payout on the acount that he upgraded the stereo..and therefore voided the electrical portion of the warranty. even though there was no connection.

anyway just my 2 cents

And why are you trying to ruin the engine with a fram filter the 5.4 modular engines tend to hate them. the filters cause a lot of startup engine noise and to top it off it's the cheapest made most over priced pile of junk there is .even the walmart brand filter is better the ford fl-820s were designed with a special drain back valve and filter media don't try to use the fram on your new ride.
