Hows my 360/390 gonna run with 4 speed toploader and 4.10 gears?

hey, i was wondering if any of you guys run a 360 or 390 with a toploader t4 warner 4 speed tranny w/ granny gear and 4.10 gears, i was just curious because im rebuilding a 360 completely with aftermarket stuff but didnt know if you put 390 crank and rods in youd have a 390 so we planed the heads for about .5 more compression so we should be ok, i have a 1967 f-250 and was just curious about horsepower, torque, top speed, acceleration speed, quarter mile speed? let me know what you guys think or know if you have a truck like this, thanks, andy.

If this is going to be a daily driver, you'll get on a first name basis with the folks at gas stations.
You'll be able to pull anything.
No one knows what you're ET might be, too many unknowns equipment wise, it ought to be good in the 1/4, but suck for anything longer.

Make a great tow truck.
Engine's gonna wind up the RPM's to it's limit if you want it to, but be very limited on sustained travel economy.

Track truck? Stay in the 1/4.

ok good thats what im lookin for 1/4 mile cuz all my buddies have ricers that do 100-150 but kinda lack on quarter mile and give me crap w/ the old six popper i have lol or had i guess and considering it only ran 90 w/ the six popper downhill with the wind pushing me that will be good for 1/4 mile, hows that granny gear gonna react should i take off in first and shift as quick as possible without over revving it or just take off in second and use the clutch alittle?

Sounds like an interesting build. Problem is, in order to give you an anywhere accurate indication of horsepower, torque, 1/4 mile times, butt-o-meter reading, whatever, we're going to need all the specifics about your engine build, down to the last detail. Headers, intake, cam, calcualted compression, etc.

ok well lets see, its a 1971 360 out of a f-250, we completely tore it down to do a full rebuild, we bored it 30 over, got the crank ground .10 .10, reconditioned rods (i didnt know at the time that if you put 390 crank and rods itd be a 390 im kickin myself in the @$$ for not doing that) the pistons are really confusing the guy we ordered them from said that the type he ordered had the same part number for 360 and 390 and i looked it up and its not on any type of pistons so i dont know if theyre car, truck, 360, 390 or what i get really confused when people ask what kind of pistons i have lol but they are just gas pistons with 4 valve slots like so (l) and we put a comp cams high energy 268 degree adv. duration and .494" lift and obviously new bearings and gaskets, the heads im really not sure about either their fe cast irons completely rebuilt with new valves and hardened seats and he planed them for about .5 higher so a 360 has 8.4:1 compression stock so im guessing around 9:1 compression and we put on a edelbrock performer intake and thats about as far as weve gotten due to $$$ stuff adds up quick, sorry for such long thread reply, i plan to put a holley street avenger 670 cfm or edelbrock performer 600 or 750 dont know which would be better, and headers doesnt matter whatever i can find cheap most likely hooker or headman thanks for the help

Alright, I'll run it through desktop dyno 2000.

Here's what we get:

Assuming 9:1 compression (I think that's probably optimistic, but ok) and the 600cfm carb we get 302hp @ 4500rpm, and 386ft-lbs @ 3500rpm.

Go with at least the 750 carb (I think), that engine is going to want to breath deep.
But- Your intake, cam, and carb really need to be 'matched'. I don't mean tweaked after the fact, but each purchased knowing what the other is going to be.
Talk to Edelbrock or your favorite cam mfg. Get them to put some 'breathing' parts together so they will really work as a unit.

Yeah, I agree you will probably want the street avenger 770 instead of the 670. I went with the 770 on my 390 and it works perfect.

Do yourself a favor..and get a toploader out of a 60's model car....you dont want a granny gear for a street machine...

I'am not sure ? but I dont think those Granny gear truck 4 speeds are toploaders?

I dont know much about 4 speed truck tranny's....and stay away from a 4 speed that has a Hydraulic slave cylinder that works the clutch fork and throw out bearing..they can NOT be speed shifted!! I learned that the hard way 30 years ago....

NP 435 and T18's are top loaders as well a side unloaders, don't ask. You can speed shift them after you reclearance but the rpm drop will kill performance.
Get a real 4-speed where 1 st is used, no granny box.

I would play on the street, never had it on a track as it would be stupid with that wide ratio 3 speed. The synchros were set below specs, a super strong spring to prevent reverse going into 4 th. Long arm clutch, arms machined to allow different weights to be added, 4.10 gears.

My stock 360/4 spd with 3.25 gears is kinda a slug, but you're set up should be a nice street performer. As long as you use a car 4 spd(not the truck creeper version). You will be really surprised and happy with car version. It's a simple install, with a driveshaft change being the worse(depends on which length tranny you get, type of truck--long bed or shortbed?).

I've used this tranny in 3 of my trucks. Makes a nice driver...and hot rod.

Quick Reply: Hows my 360/390 gonna run with 4 speed toploader and 4.10 gears?
