My local transmission specialist reccomends a total flush every 30,000 miles and filter change every 90,000 under normal conditions.

I have an '02 F250 SD V10 Auto Trans. After reading the threads I decided to look under my truck. I believe my transmission pan has a drain plug. I'm not after purging everything because I only tow my 5th wheel twice a month during the summer months. I read the Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission article. How do I know which transmission I have? Since I'm not doing a total purge, how many quarts will I need to put back in?

Thanks in Advance.

well i hope you are going to drain the pan and the t/c so you will need about 14 qts and no need for a new filter or gasket on ford transmissions.

If you tow do not go over 30,000 on trans changes. At the least drain the pan and refill. On my 03 V10 if I drain the pan it takes 4.5 quarts. If you have the trans serviced by a dealer that is all they do for a charge of 100.00

Thanks RR 11, that's what I was looking for. I still need to figure out which tranny my '02 has to determine which tranny fluid to use.

It's a 4R100. That was the only automatic with the V10 until 2005.

Out of fear of sounding stupid, I'll ask anyway. I thought they all had torqueshift converters?

All the TorqShifts have TorqShift converters. All of the 4R100s had 4R100 converters.

For an automatic transmission, every 30,000 miles... sooner if it starts to darken in color. Also, I recommend that you get it flushed, in addition to dropping the pan and changing the filter. That way you get all the ATF that is still in the torque converter (more than half of the total trans fluid).

Unless I am mistaken, Ford droped the drain in the converters in 99. The 4R100 takes Mercon, not to be confused with MerconII or Mercon/Dexon.I had the flued changed by my dealer at 30,000 and noticed on the paperwork I was billed for 5 qt of fluid. So the dealer does not drain the converter.

You're mistaken. Ford dropped the drain plugs early in the 2002 model year.

The correct fluid for the 4R100 is MERCON. Almost all MERCON fluids also have a DEXRON III rating. That's fine. There is no such thing as MERCON II, so you don't need to worry about that. There isn't a MERCON III or MERCON IV, either. There is a MERCON V, and that's the wrong fluid for a 4R100.
