My father has a 91' cummins w/290000 miles on it, and 3 5spd trannys. Sure it smokes a bit and the back end looks like it still has the 30' horse trailer on it's back from all the years of heavy loads and ALL the electrical problems from p-windows to fuseilbe links blowing from time to time, and door jams are allways out of adjustment but you know the truck still works hard everyday and still gets awesome gas milage, even in HER tired state. Yes we still take it hunting every year ( mom won't let him take out his new dodge ) and it makes every trip w/o any problems. LOL so far... As for me I drive a 03' psd and I like the room and the power of the 6.0 ...

The funny part is I know some people who love those motors one guy had over 500,000 on a 6.2.personally after gm made the 5.7 i would not touch one or any other diesel they have in there vehicles.
My father actually had a 6.5l chevy placed in his Nissan Patrol for towing. Wasn't a bad engine reliability wise, but suffered from turbo lag quite badly.
since it could actually hold together beyond the 1st oil change.

Here's some junk I found about the Ford 6.9l engine. They run strong, and repairs are rare, but if they do need to be repaired, expect to shell out a pretty penny. After calling around to a lot of Ford dealers about their opinions on 6.9l diesels, they all said almost the same thing, "they're easy to work on, but the repairs will be more expensive than the 7.3l, Dodge, or Chevrolet diesel." Also, most of the smaller repair items (i.e. oil filters, and the like...) come double packaged (they sell them in twos, so they run at a higher price, but you do get two...) I'm not sure about non-dealer parts, you may be able to find them cheaper, I have only checked on direct from dealer parts. Anyways...
When I think back on it, GM's come a looong way. First, there was the 5.7...durable as a potato chip. After the first two or three hit the lot, the dealer put a "stop order" directive on anything that had that engine available. I know of at least one Oldsmobile dealer that went broke because of those things. Taking them in trade was pretty entertaining. not Then there was the 6.2- nice enough an engine, just not enough of it. Accessories caused the most grief (fuel pumps, hydroboost, etc). Then came the 6.5, which really was a breakthrough- decent power, quiet- occasional fuel pump issues, but a quantum leap over what came before. Unfortunately, it had enough torque to rip a transmission right out of it . All things being equal, the D-Max has been pretty uneventful. We like uneventful in the car biz.
Head bolts on the 5.7 diesel was the biggest problem. Check this site out, it's fun reading. www.olds-diesel.com GM also made a 4.3 260ci V8 and 4.3 263ci V6 diesel.
Comparing power or reliability? I trucks I've drivin with those engines(6.9/non-turbo 7.3) I'd say the 6.5 felt more powerful, as far as reliability, that's a differant story.
