sorry it took so long to get back to you on that axle info. I belive it is 9.77/7.17 but not real sure. I'm sure you know the drill its a vacuum 2 speed. Its on a buudy of mines truck that hes parting out. I've also got a timken style axle out an f-5 not a clue on the ratio but if someone needs it say the word. I love big trucks like these. Ive got about another 3 to 4 months before mines road worthy but it looks like i'll have the only one in five parishes on the road.

Update on my '56 f600. Finished the install of the 390 and four speed. Running two barrel with headers and unknown cam. Dual glass packs and the two speed rear. Yea, it pulls real goooood. Hauled a buddies suburban on my trailer and didn't slow her down. Of course the buddy will never brave another ride in my truck, too loud, too bumpy, too rough. I love it.

Hey no problem.....I'm not sure of that ratio.....As far as I know there was 2 ratios available for many years....
5.83/8.11:1 and 6.33/8.83:1 My manual is for 1954/1955 but I've been told that the ratios didn't change much over the years.
THere's other single speeds too, ......6.2, 6.8 (mine) and 7.2 to 1
In the F/C-800/900's, there was a 7.17/9.77:1 but I'm not sure if you could put that in an F-6/600 anybody know? (that would be worse ratio than what I have!)
As far a vacuum actuated shift, I don't think it'd be a problem ... I probably will have adequate vacuum since I'll be using a vacuum pump. I have a pretty big vacuum tank for the booster. The vacuum shift shouldn't take much to operate.
The later ones have electric shift (6V) and I'll bet it would be quite easy to swap the 6v motor for a similar 12v one. I'd really like to find a 56 or newer rear end since it would already be a 12v shift. I just need to ensure that I'll be able to swap my brake backing plates, shoes, hubs/bearings etc. (My brakes/shoes, bearings and seals are all new) I want to be able to use my hubs since they are 5 lug.....I think 56 and newer could be 6 lug?
Regards,
Rick

your probly right about the ratio on that eaton. its freggin low for sure. I now my 51 is stupid low even in high but it pulls like hell. as for as using the vacuum, there is an eaton check valve on the firewall that is actuated by a cable(kinda like a choke) mounted on the dash. There is also a vacuum line from the check valve to the speedo to switch the speedo head so it keeps correct readings. if you dont care about that then your facrory speedo will do. as far as using your backing plates and such with a newer rear you probly could. Get a number off of a doner rear and then I would contact eaton or a truck salvage yard and check the bearing sizes on the hubs. If there the same your hubs sould fit. the widths are the same as modern rears I believe, but Ive been wrong before.

Old truck manuals
Howdy,
I bought mine (1954/1955 FORD TRUCK) from a seller on EBAY for about $35.
It covers models from the F-100 to the F-900. the section on brakes covers everything from single axle F-100 brakes to double axle air brakes etc.
There's even a section on axles all the way up to the tandem axle F-700/800/900's
It's pretty extensive.
I'm sure the same places have other years too. I don't remember which place I went to but here's a couple of examples:
http://www.gregsonline.com/
http://www.books4cars.com/3way.htm
You might want to search around for the best deal etc.

Rick

Rick thanks for the info. I checked out your photos and thats one bad a@@ Ford you got there. It ought to be one bad Mother with that cummins in it. I was wondering why the auto. There's nuthin like a big fat honkin floor shifter to give that big truck feel to it, not to mention that turbo sounds sweet when the clutch is pressed. I always thought of putting a 4-71 or 4-53 series detroit in mine just to be really different, but my top choice would be the cummins for sure. Keep us posted and keep on truckin!

The automatic has a 0.69 final OD ratio. The NV-4500 and NV 5600 is 0.75 I think. I get a little higher ratio witht he auto. Besides, I used to drive truck. I really don't want to have to push gears in this truck. The A-618 built right is a pretty good trans and it's hydraulically operated.
The 4-71 would be a pretty big engine. I have a friend that put a 4-53T in a IH 1 ton pickup years ago. It ran pretty good. IT WAS SEVERELY NOISY! I used to drive a 3 axle convetional with an 8v92TA ....I do like the sound of a 2-stroke GM diesel.....but not a steady diet of it.
The advantage of the Cummins is that they have been in Dodge trucks since 1989 so there's a lot of them sitting in wrecking yards all over the country. THere's also parts available for them just about anywhere.

Rick
