Unhappy ??? about the EGR plate???

Hi there I am trying to figure out this problem.......

I just put on a new Holley carb on my 351 m and I am still having problems tuning it. Is there a problem if I am using the EGR plate that the carb sits on but it has a plate over the back portion and everything is disconnected for the EGR system.........

Will it be better if I just take off that EGR plate and can I just bend the kickdown rod to fit on the Holley carb....??????????

There is no problem as long as there are no vacuum leaks at the EGR plate. You can bend the kickdown linkage AS LONG AS the actuation point is not changed for the trans kickdown(passing gear).

I just finished posting about this on your OTHER post. imo, It probably would be better if you keep the same discussion on the same carb. related problem in one thread/topic so it would be easier to follow.

If you simply lose the EGR valve and don't change anything else, you may run into EGR ping. Engines with EGR need more timing advance, so when you take out the EGR without readjusting the vacuum advance, you'll get an effect similar to spark knock.

In my opinion, you should leave the engine with a working EGR system. The 400\351m were basically made for EGR and it takes a lot of annoying trial and error to run properly without EGR. If you remove the EGR plate entirely, you'll be dealing with hot exhuast gas underneath the carb which is no good. Many will tell you that you won't see much of a difference in performance with or without EGR, and I happen to be one of those people. In my opinion, losing EGR isn't worth the hassle.

I don't know all the advantages or disadvantages of removing the EGR plate but if you decide to go that route you can buy a carb. spacer to put in place of the EGR plate. The are just a tad thicker than the EGR plate, one inch. This should keep you from having to bend your kickdown rod. You can get one at most any auto parts store.
