GM V-10 maybe???
Hey guys I just heard GM might be going to a V-10 in there new HD trucks. Does any one know about this. I always thought this might happen but the GM guys sure hope it dont. I always thought Fords V-10 was the right engine for a truck. Whereas GM was caught in the middle. The 6.0 wasnt big enough an the 8.1 was a gas hog an drank a lot of oil. Any thoughts out there?

That would almost be funny. On alot of the GM truck forums all you hear from the "big block" fans is how great the 8.1L is and how stupid and weak Ford's V10 is in a HD pickup. They run around saying it revs too high and belongs in car despite the fact the 2000-2004 model 2v V10s hold their own against the 8.1L in every comparison I've read. Obviously the new 3V 6.8L beats it hands down!
Wonder what they'll have to say when GM gives them a V10!!
I agree with you on the 6.8L being right for a truck. The 6.0L is too small, the 8.1L is a gas pig and uses oil and the 6.8L is just right. I know two guys locally with 8.1L pickups and they rarely see double-digit mileage unless they keep it on the highway. I've always held the opinion if you need more performance than the 6.8L offers you should forget about big, inefficient gas engines and go with a diesel.

Dodge dropped there V10, and for a reason, I knew a couple people with them and they had lots of problems with them, plus the milage sucked and they sold way more Cummins. My cousin has a 6.0 GMC 2500HD and he doesnt like it at all, he has had lots of problems. It knocks when its cold and GM told him it was not "detrimental" to the engine's life so they wont do anything, I guess he has heard that there are quite a few 6.0 guys having the same issue. One of his friends has a 1500HD crew cab with the 8.1, he said its pretty quick but it cant pass a gas station.
I dont want to make any remarks that might be considered flaming on the Ford V10 vs Diesel though, that debate is overdone and people just take it wayyyyy too personal.

This story gets more interesting by the moment. Evidentally GM axed the V10 project for the third time recently because of ongoing R&D issues (breaking cranks, rumor has it). In the wild and wacky world of bond downgrades and shifting cash-flow targets, this may not be the last word.
Obvious options are a continuation of the 8.1, or a supercharged 6.0. The only thing fer shur is a 345 HP version of the 6.0 in the 1500 Chevy truck line (Pickups, 'Burbs, etc)

The V10 trucks I drive('02s) are weak and use a lot of oil. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, they're F550s loaded pretty close to the GVW. A guy I work with had a F250 V10 for one day, he got 7.9mpg. Took it back and got a V8 powered F250 and got 12mph. Not bad for a V8 in a truck. Maybe the new V10 is better, but the ones we've got don't even come close to a 7.3 powerstroke.
As far as the 8.1 I never drove one in a one ton GM, only the father-in-law's Sub. Good power, empty, but never drove it pulling a trailer. He says it doesn't use oil, but who's to say. Double-digit mileage is none existent, 8-9.5 at best. I will say this, it doesn't have the power of a duramax.

how come my v10 f250 gets 12.4 every day mpg and 11 towing? and it uses no oil at all between 3000 mile changes . as to gm i work in a dual brand dealer and i was asking my gm feild rep. today about the 8.1 and he said it's days are limited due to its emmissions from bad flame travel with it's bore size . but would probibly live on for marine use for a while longer just as the old nova 140 ci 4 cylinder has as a 181 ci motor. gm and every one else is always playing with new motor designs and time will tell what they wind up with.

As to it being weak, mine will tow a 7000lb trailer up about any highway hill in my area and hold 70mph in OD or 3rd. I don't really need much more power and I can't imagine why anyone would classify that as being "weak". Especially given the fact the the truck's curb weight is nearly 7000lbs.

As far as oil usage, do a quick test. Go to the V10 section of this forum and do a search using the words "V10" and "oil" and see how many discussions there are about V10's using oil. Next, go to a GM truck forum and do a similar test for "8.1L" and "oil" and see how many threads you get there. That's about all I need to say about that issue. Case closed!

Just got back from doing what you said. I checked the first 10 pages of this sites V10 page. Then I went to the dieselplace and checked their 8.1 page but only found there to be two pages so I went to gm-trucks and looked at 10 pages there. So 10 pages V10 and 12 pages 8.1, here's what I found.
Oil usage V10-one discussion, a poll. 35.15% said that the engine uses one quart in 1000 to 3000 miles. 64.84% said engine uses one quart, less than one quart, or no oil in more than 3000 miles.
Oil usage 8.1- two discussions, no polls. One discussion a guy said he used 0.5 quarts in 3000 miles. He did not get any replies. The other discussion was very long so here's the best and worst. Two quarts in 3000 miles. No oil usage in 5000 miles. Consensus: about 50/50.
So some V10s and 8.1s use oil and some don't with a few more 8.1s using oil. Nothing we didn't already know is it?
Why compare gassers to diesels? Because the diesels in both trucks have more power than both big gas engines. Not more hp but more torque. From my personal experience pulling with a gasser vs. a diesel, the diesel pulls better. So for me, I'm going to compare the gassers to a diesel.

Don't turn this thread into a big gas vs diesel debate. It's been done a million times before. If you searched through ten pages of the v10 forum, you'd probably saw that.
As for the GM v10, I don't see it happening with their current financial problem. I never understood why they didn't just at 2 cylinders to the 6.0 like Ford did to the 5.4. The 8.1 will die pretty soon due to, as Captchas said, it's large bore not being able to smog.

Well most 8.1s are known to take oil its a common fact. Ive read many forums an talk to several people. Glad to here yours isnt. Ive never heard anyone say the V-10 was weak in any way. I still dont like how the GM hDs frame sits so low. Off road that would be a nightmare.Where I go I would get high centered. So that rules out that. Like I said GM trucks are a city truck they do alright there. I wanna work truck with a roomy crew cab. Fords the only way to go. JMO.
