NP205 bolt up to a ZF S5-42 Tranny?

Howdy folks,
I goofed and sent this as private email to one of the posting Guru's and should have posted it as public info. What I'm wondering is, will the '92 and '94 5 speed (ZF S5-42) out of a small block Windsor 351 F-350 4X4 bolt up to the NP 205 in my '79 Bronco? I won't be using the 351 Big Block for power.
Thanks Folks,
Pat

Curious, what will you be running in the Bronco then? As far as bolt pattern is concerned, yes, it bolt up. But, you will need to cut a notch in the ZF Tcase mounting flang to allow the upper shift rail to pass through. Use the tcase/tranny gasket as a reference

I do beleive that all Ford trannies and Tcases have the same circular, 6 bolt pattern. Well, at least as far back in the years anyone would consider scrounging parts off of

Also, you do realize there will be considerable work to get the ZF into your Bronco?

Am going to put a Cummins 4bt in front of the ZF. Need the ZF for the overdrive to give me the highway revs. at normal driving speeds that I want. 354 gears and 35" tires plus .76 OD = Diesel Bliss.

Yep, I do know that it's going to take a bit of doing. Have another Bronco that I'm going to use to mock up the installation before I pull the clip off the mint 79 XLT Lariat that I'll use as my daily driver. Am in the process of doing a rust proofing on steroids on her as we speak. (Heated garage kept and never off road and hardly ever driven in the rain. 33K miles. Breathtaking sled it is.) Want it to toodle along for 20 years or so with only maintenance.

Thanks for the info. on the ZF to NP205 mating. Do you know whether there's a set of speedo gears that will come closer to being accurate with the tires that I'm running? My '79 F-250 4X4 is the same ratio with the same tires and the speedo is way out. Something closer would be nice.

Thanks,
Pat Patrick

Man, if that bronco is as nice as that F-250, I'd be afraid to chip the paint taking it apart And that deisel project sounds sweet I've toyed with putting an older turboed 6.9 or 7.3 in my '78, but don't have the time.

As for speedo gears, you should be able to find one that will get it close. Your best bet is to take it to a shop to have them match the right one to it. Just an example, I went from 2.73 gears, too 3.55 gears in my truck, with 31" tires. I had a 16 tooth (green) speedo gear, and changed it to an 18 tooth (yellow), and its off by 5 mph. With stock tires, it would be dead on. A 19 tooth (pinkish) would put it 5 mph slower. I have the pinkish one on my '78, and it is nearly dead on (38" tires, 4.10 gearing, 1:1 4th). This is just for reference, and as much as I know. On my truck at least, each tooth is good for about 10 mph change in the reading. But I have read on here that there are different toothed worm gears on the out put shaft, which is why I suggested the shop. Or, to go with the deisel, spend the extra bling for an electric speedo, and calibrate it yourself

Thanks for the F-250 words and y'know it works even better than it looks and it looks GOOD. Taking the Bronco apart will be one of those done very slowly things and with another guy to help. I want to put the whole thing together in the donor Bronco so that all the screw-up can be made there, at least that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Much appreciate the info. on the speedo gearing. Didn't know a thing about what you told me. Whew!! Nice day it is to get a batch of '79 Ford info. but then that is the major cool thing about FTE.

Thanks again for the info.
