New Respect for the Titan

New Respect for the Titan
Well,
I was driving home and just happened to pull up next to a new Triton today. We did what guys always do, and when the light changed, we both took off. My truck stayed right next to him for a few seconds, but he pulled away from me before too long. I backed off when he was about 2 car lengths in front of me. He rolled down his window at the next light and I told him, "nice truck." Those things really do have alot of cajones! I was quite impressed with its performance, but I also told the guy that I wasn't getting rid of my Ford!!

I have run two with my 6.0 and hurt um.....start off in 4xhigh...bring too 2K on the tack
and go....when you hit the top in of third just jump off the throttle...

I've ridden around in one of my buddy's before, nice creature comforts, but wasn't real impressed with acceleration. My 7.3L felt like it was quicker. Still having trouble seeing how in their commericals they say it's tough, but when you hit the turn signal, you get the little foreign car electronic dinging instead of the standard clicking.??

LOL thats very funny. I cant remeber what mag it was but one tested the big 3 and the tundra and titan 0 to 60 times empty and with 800lbs in the bed and the titan won both categories but they decided to try somthing different and run a empty f150 against a titan with the 800lbs of stuff still in the bed and the titan still ran away from the f150 that had no load.
Edmunds tested both trucks pulling a 6000 pound trailer to 60 and it took the titan 16.8 sec to get that load to 60 and f150 took over 21sec to get that same load to speed.
These were all 4x4 trucks and the 150 did have the 5.4.
The titans closest competitor in this competition was the hemi which got the trailer to 60 in 19.5 sec.
The f150 is a nice truck and has plenty of power to do what its designed to do but its still not faster than the titan loaded or not and it dosent need to be but i have to give credit to the titan.

The 6.0s are quick but will not touch a titan unless its modded so maybe yours is?
The 7.3 would be even father behind than the 6.0 unless it was also moded. Both of those diesls are torque monsters and do a great job at pulling massive loads but neither would touch a titan if the titan was empty and they were also empty.

As far as I am aware Tim's 6.0l is standard (correct Tim?)
You can improve your 0-60 time aplenty in a 6.0l by just using a 4x4 launch as Tim stated.
Remember all the magazines that test them would launch the 6.0l in 4x2, and in first gear traction is merely an option modulated by your right foot, and it will squeal them will into 2nd.
I still don't know which would be quicker, but the quoted acceleration figures for the 6.0l don't really do it justice.

The Titan's got 2.94 and 3.36 for gear options...I can see why not everyone would be impressed with how it gets off the line. I know the tranny is supposed to figure out things, but maybe word that 3.73s have been invented hasn't filtered over to Nissan USA.
As for the comment about the "dinging"...Oh well, maybe the horn sounds tough. Anybody check on that yet?

That is due to the low gearing it uses in the transmission.
The 2.94 rear end provides equivelant to a 3.73 reduction in a F150
The 3.36 rear end provides equivelant to a 4.10 reduction.
They just choose to do the gearing thing differently (and I don't know why either???)
The only thing I can think of it reducing rotational losses on a driveshaft, and enabling a vehicle to run smaller crown wheels on the differentials to enable greater ground clearance.
But then again the transmission would have to be a whole lot tougher.

Well comparing apples to apples, there isent another 1/2 ton truck that gets off the line like the titan. The competitors with the 3.73 are not getting off the line faster than the titan. Not only do they scream off the line but they continue to pull all the way up to redline.
Many test prove this. Thats the advange of having a great motor mated to a 5 speed auto. The 2.94 acts like a 3.73 and the 3.36 acts like a 4.10 in comparably equiped trucks with 4 speeds.

Has nothing to do with 4-speed, just their decision to go with things. Not a bad way to do it, if components are up to snuff. Have "high" gears for when you hit OD, and have the extra "low" gears for the accel.
What do sales say? What do fleet and commercial application say? The Titan is designed for those that want a truck that acts like a car. I can't say the Ford hasn't been hit by this bug too, but not to the extent of the others.

The Titan has plenty of power. I don't know how reliable they are, but I think what holds them back is the size of the truck bed. If you get the crew cab the bed is only
4 1/2 feet long. It will hold your lunch box but where do your tools go? It is really just a large car with an open trunk. If they had a real bed I think they would sell more, but not to me unless it has the blue oval on it.

My bro-in-law just purchased a Titan a few months ago, it had 7 k on it, the rearend is leaking and it makse a sqawk-ing noise from drive to reverse,, noise come from the rearend, my sis was driving it,,and said listen to this,, sounded to me like leaf spring sqauuking,,I stood on the rear bumper bouncing the truck,,and sqawk,,sqawk,,sqawk,, so I think thats it.
I recall my 99' F-350 dump,,after awhile the springs, made noise,(the same noise) and it went away after several loads were installed in the truck.
